identifying and setting valves on a bypass radiator

View the thread, titled "identifying and setting valves on a bypass radiator" which is posted in UK Plumbers Forums on UK Plumbers Forums.

Hi all,

How do i know if i have a bypass radiator in my flat. The agency have said its the bathroom radiator, how do they know this? Its a single panel radiator, all the others in the flat are doubles, is this a clue?

What is the purpose of a bypass and should the on/off and lock-shield valves be left fully open.
I'd like to balance the system and not sure what to do with the bypass radiator-can it damage the system if its not left fully open?

Thanks,

if you have trvs on all the rads and they close down the pump wont be very happy, so there should now be an auto bypass fitted to prevent the pump popping its clogs, older systems used a rad, normally the bathroom one to do the job. so if this is the case always leave one rad valve fully open, and the other shut enough to balance the rad with the rest of the system

Ok having thought about it now, if the pump can't pump the water anywhere because all of the radiators are all closed off (an unlikely situation) then it will eventually burst a pipe if the pressure builds sufficiently. The bypass permits flow to occur whatever the situation?

Just to clarify on the bathroom rad, if i leave the on/off valve fully open and then close down the lock shield some of the way, thats what you meant? in order to balance that rad with the rest of the system. Thanks!

No pal leave the lock shield open , you bathroom rad won't be a big one so it won't affect your balancing
