The company I now work for is spending £21K+ to train a gas/water mains/service laying apprentices & £25K+ to train electrical cable jointing apprentices, this is just the college side.
The electrical PPE is £900+ to give an idea of the other costs.

No government funding here, it is all from their own pockets, can you imagine a plumbing / heating company making that kind of investment in there further ??

Anyone know what it cost to train a BG apprentice ? & no it is not peanuts or any funny stuff like that before you let rip. LOL

Stop ruining the thread Thomas. Sorry chris do tell. Was I close?

Id say the BG training will run into the tens of thousands. I'm only a contractor and they are putting me through loads of training at the minute and I bet it's costing them thousands.

Is that better nob head 🙂

When I did my apprenticeship we were told it was 40k! However it was the days of labour government who fronted about half of it apparently.

I guess the difference is that it isn't so easy for a cable jointer or a service layer to take all the training, and then leave and set up in competition. The investment needed to start up in those businesses are a bit more than a van and a few £k of tools.

It is still early days Ray but as I understand this industry a lot are sub-contract or at least will move at the drop of a hat if the price is right. So not to dissimilar to plumbing they may not set up on the own but they may well be tempted away.

We have what we are calling our "Golden Handcuffs" a very attractive bonus scheme that only pays out at the end & we don't teach them the high level (pole) High Voltage stuff which is where the extra money can be had.

Oh and as I understand it we are a good employer.

I think the difference is the cost to train, just sitting here sorting budget out, it stands at £32k per jointer for college only, not going to get many "I fancy having a go, changers" taking it up even if it is a lot easier than plumbing & heating.

i agree with ray both the jobs you describe have limited uses outside of the utilities companies generally the blokes on that work rotate from company to company depending whose got the contract this year very much a closed shop regarding getting into it

my old company's college got about 8-9 grand per person (adult jobseeker) to get them a level 2 and basic gas qualifications over a 5-6 months course. Im going back about 6-8 years
