Hey guys.

just wondered what you would do in this situation,
the other week i went to install a new combi. i did a TT before i did anything, they had a 1 mb drop. i didnt isolate any appliances at the time.

i advised the customers of this leak. they said they never smelt any gas so i made a note of this before i did any more work,

after installing the boiler i did the TT again, still had a 1mbar drop.
i dont like leaving this kind of drop so i advised the customers i would like to find where the leak was, they said ok and off i went, eventually found the leak coming from the iso valve behind the hob, leak fixed.

however i thought to myself as your allowed up to a 4mbar drop with no smell of gas and appliances left on could i have just made a note of this on the certificate and left it??

i never would as id never be able to sleep at night but do some people leave the leak and just do the install?

just one of those things i had a sudden thought on.

what are your views on this guys?

I don't do gas but would have sorted the leak out, even if it was within limits.

I tend to do this with other (wet) joints or stop tap if I notice a small seap. If it's a 5 minute fix, I just do it. I usually tell the customer but sometimes I don't bother. (Also depends on how much I like the customer!)

you could have left it, and as you say marked it on the paperwork, but again as you say you want to feel right about the job, and with customers permission you traced and found it, the only other thing i would have done was to discuss how long you were to spend tracing the leak in case after 10 hrs you havent found it and they dont want to pay you

I always say to the customer its ok to leave but can investigate further if they want me to at a set price.

As the last responsible person on site. you should have isolated the appliances then you would have seen it was "pipework only". Charge the customer for trace and repair and then replaced the boiler.

But in reality spot on and note it on the paperwork.

you dont take any prisoners do you lol i would have left it myself as it is a permissable leak

does it say in the regs you have to isolate the applainces to check its not on pipework?

imo you have to give the customer the options and take it from there, you may want to make sure for peace of mind but its would be fine to leave and i only do work that is not 100% required if i know i will get paid for my efforts.
