Gas Engineer
My understanding was that this only applies to open flued flue systems. But a few have been put down as ncs by service engineers on room sealed flues. Baxi Duo Tec being one, which Baxi supply a plastic collar for covering any gaps around the flue through the ceiling, but doesn't appear to provide any fire protection. Surely it's only like having a soil stack going through a ceiling and isn't a gas related issue, but a building regs issue and therefore can't be classified.

As far as i'm aware they don't need fire stopped. I take it this is some big gas service guys writing them out? Par for the course CYA with them.

Read section 7 of Part B Building Regulations. Its all about fire stopping. It does not just apply to open flues it applies to room sealed flues and other pipes and services. You can download this for free from the government web site.

So basically from what I gather from the response it says it's required, but providing the plasterboard has been 'made good' ie. filled in around, surely it's no different to having no flue pipe there at all or possibly even more fire resistant because the metal won't burn in the event of fire?

its to do with the fire rating of the ceiling or wall your passing through. If the ceiling is 1/2 hr fire rated (which normally 1 layer of plasterboard is) then you have to make good to this standard. If the ceiling/wall is 1,2,4 hour then you have to make good to that standard.

the WB 2 white plates are a good solution but need to be fixed well, not with deca filla like most i see. some supalux board is also a good solution.

on open flued systems with twinwall you offten find the need to use a ventilated fire stop plate to maintain the air gap but provide the fire rating of the structure in the event of a fire.
