Hi, i'm new to the forum today, I'm seeking some advice after we had a radiator fitted.

We chose the radiator ourselves as it needed to fit into a tight space, it was a Lauren Cypress Vertical Radiator 315 x 1800mm. Purchased via QS Supplies. It was fitted and was not heating up properly. We hot the heating firm back to take a look and they said that the hot water was flowing across the bottom of the radiator and not rising up the tubes to provide heat.

When out plumber called the manufacturer they said it was a known issue and would send out a baffle free of charge. The plumber is going to charge me one hours labour to remove the rad and fit the baffle. I'm a little put out that I have to pay for what the manufacturer said was a known issue, I called them today to see if they would pay for the plumber to come out again and they said no.

Can anyone offer any advice on this?

Also the plumber connected the radiator up to the pipes in the opposite direction, so the hot water flow is coming into the radiator on the other side from the TRV, although he said it is a bi-directional valve i'm not convinced this is a good practice, there was no need to do this as access to the pipes was not an issue.

These types of radiators (I have several) often have to be fitted in a certain way. Mine clearly stated that a baffle would stop the flow from rising up the radiator. If he fitted the radiator upside down this will stop it heating up. It normally doesn't make a difference if it flows from left to right or right to left. Just make sure it's up the right way.

I had the same issues, these lauren Cyprus rads are.......badly designed from a technical point of view.
as you brought and supplied the radiator it is technically your issue and he has the right to charge you, if he had supplied it then it would be his, he has fitted a faulty material you supplied. he has done his job that you paid him for, fit a radiator.

as for the trv as it's bi directional it doesn't matter at all which side it goes, when it shuts off the flow stops completely through the radiator.

if it urks you badly then ask him to switch them while he fits the baffle HOWEVER his plan will be to drain the radiator itself and not the system hence only taking one hour. if he switches positions he will need to drain everything or freeze the pipes. this will take longer and incur a bigger charge.

in my humble opinion he's being reasonable.

My issues isn't with the plumber, he's been helpful in coming back to see why it's not working, it's really the manufacturer that is the problem, if they knew it was an issue why didn't they make sure all of these went out with baffles or had notes in the installation documents highlighting the potential problem, the fact that they are sending out a baffle free of charge means they have accepted responsibility for this defect.
