Janus 3 Water Heater

I have just removed leaking HW cylinder. This is a single feed indirect (air bubble) type connected to a dedicated Janus 3 circulator water heater. I have no intention of replacing with similar as this is expensive and unnecessary (WH only feeds cylinder - CH is hot air from separate heater) so the question is Direct or Indirect. If I go Direct am I likely to have a problem with continuous (not very soft) fresh water circulation building up deposits and blocking heater matrix? Would an inline strainer help prevent this (easier to clean)? If I go Indirect I will have to install small F&E tank but can only get maximum 4-5ft head as I am in ground floor flat and not feasible to run up four floors into roof space. Will this be enough? My pipe rise to horizontal length ratio should be fine. Any advice or recommendations would be much appreciated.

My advise is to seek the services of a gas safe registered engineer as any change in system type also requires adjustments to the settings of your appliance in this particular model (having worked on hundereds of these years ago) and sometimes the change of a compenent is also required. I won't be more specific as this is the job for a qualified engineer.

The questions you ask regarding the system arrangements also show you are uncertain and with the temperaures you are dealing with:

* The lack of safety devices on this type of arrangement if you do get it wrong
* Having seen a job that has gone wrong in the past and the temperature of the water going through the ceiling (diy'er)
* Over flowing roof tanks scalding children in nearby bedrooms

I would leave it to an expert.
