Kitchen sink waste foam washer

When putting the waste in a kitchen sink. Do people usually use the foam washer that goes on the top side of the sink and the waste. Or throw this and use clear silicone?

No get foam washer and throw as far away as humanly possible!

I have always used plumbers mait, never had a problem but it's a bit like marmite!

I have always just used clear silicone on the top as I have found the foam washer can squeeze out and look un-sightly.

Those foam washers are worse than useless. I found some thin rubber ones the same size which work great.

As someone here told me, as long as it doesn't leak or look hideous

I usually use the foam washers on the kitchen sink But silicone on the basin

I don't know why just always have although I can't see any problem using silicone,

And if the washer squeezes out just trim it with a Stanley knife

when you think about it, why do you need to use anything? as long as you properly silicone everything underneath. where's the water going to get out? goo accumulates under rim off top part of waste so no washer makes this less likely. i just silicone but have started to think nothing might be necessary

Use the foam washer that comes with it. It does its job ie stops the water emptying when the stopper is in and they won't notice it doesn't work unless she steeps her bras in the sink.
Basins are a different kettle of fish. Throw the washers to *** and use silicone or whatever you like. MI's my arse.

Why would the foam washer stop the water emptying and also why would you want it to?

Oh I see. Surely if the water empties in the abscence of the washer it must be leaking underneath.

If you don't seal the top of the grating and put the stopper in the water will seap under it and run down the drain and empty the sink or basin or bath or whatever. You won't have a leak as such cos it runs down the drain.

No silicone needed. I don't really like silicone for sealing wastes. Some basin wastes are so crap that they need a bit of plumbers mait but no silicone!
