After reading about all the doom and gloom within the industry (and my sore back!) it got me thinking if you decided to chuck it all in. What would you do instead?

HA HA nothing ever goes to plan, in twenty years youll be looking to retire at 70 and spain will have gone bankrupt and all us expat hopefuls will have been kicked out. I love being an optimist🙂

Spend enough years at this job and there is very little else challenging enough, with the obvious exception of trying to apply Deep Heat to your achy bits whilst trying to avoid the inevitable cramp.

just dont mix deep heat with your anusol, seen an older senior rating in the Navy running around looking for a hose when he got it wrong. He got called FA from then on.

im 57 and i find planning for retirement a bit depresing. i tried to invest in a decent pension when i was 33 and it all went belly up a few years ago. been self emp most of my working life got a bit of money in property but unless the housing market starts moving that aint looking that good. iv got no faith in the robbing money boys who work in investments pensions etc so feel like i am burying my head in the sand taking one year at a time and playing as much golf as poss and having as many hols as i can

I havnt the slightest inclination to pack it in, Im fortunate enough to have around 4,000 regular customers and 3 sons to carry on, i am also fortunate that I love my job, and enjoy working more than I enjoy money and material things, so I will probably work till im 85 and then hopefully get shot by a jealous husband! 🙂

I do a bit of work for a guy who used to be a gas engineer and is now doing very well in property. He turns some stuff round and rents out others depending on the market . He unfortunately had a hip replacement and now acts more as a foreman or project manager. He is great to work for as he see everything from your point of view.

sounds like your in a very nice place Derek, i was hoping that my son would come into the business but after a few years decided it was not for him, which means problem solving and two handed jobs can be a real struggle at times having to rely on friends which can cause complications timing etc. these things take a bit of the fun out of work for me.

it has both plus and negative points, I discharged my eldest over disagreements on 'monday blues', all 3 will try and take advantage of the fact that the boss is their dad, I tell them 'I am your Dad always, but in work I am your boss', i am quite soft with them and have to put the boot in occasionally when things are not to my liking, on the plus side, when the going gets tough they are as a family and will pull the stops out most of the time, they all need to learn how to run things though or they will struggle when I pop my clogs, I have told them this, and that we never know what will happen tomorrow, none of them currently seem inclined to take the reigns in a positive way, I am working on them now to improve the situation, the very best thing is, we all do things in a similar way so the customer never has a discrepancy in what was done 'last time' regardless of who attends.
