Loss off water pressure

I have a loss of water pressure throughout my system in my house. This only happened when the local water authorities were working on the roads in my area. I was getting lots of residue coming through my taps and was wondering if this could be the cause and if so what would be the best way to resolve this, many thanks in advance for replies, Ian

I would contact your local water authority and make a complaint. They have a duty of care not to contaminate the mains water supply, and supply you with potable water, the fact that you have witnessed work going on and suffered residue coming through your taps means that they have failed in their duty of care.

Your reason for lack of water is obviously a reduced pressure whilst they are working on the main, but you may find that ball valves in your property are blocked therefore you may require a plumber to clear them.

You may have a case for some form compensation from the water authority for the inconveniance caused

Additionally to the above, it's possible that if enough contamination entered the pipe that you could have a partial blockage at the incoming stopcock in the road/path, the one in your house or pretty much any other outlet too.

That said, the fact that all outlets are down would suggest one of the two main stopcocks. Do you have a filter on your main? That too can clog quickly with sand/silt.

What type of system do you have? Mains throughout on a combi boiler, or an unvented cylinder? Or is it the conventional roof tank with hot water cylinder in a cupboard? Or a combination of the previous?
