Hi Guys,

I'm after some general advice about plumbing as we are planning on renovating our house. We are thinking of changing the mains supply to 32 mm as we are under the impression, partly from this website, that bigger is better. What I can't understand is, if we have 32mm mdpe into the house and then immediately connect it to 22mm copper does that not defeat the point of putting a 32mm mains? Surely the ultimate flow rate is limited to the smallest diameter? Or am I missing something?

The house will be 4 or 5 beds and 3 bathrooms when finished and we are thinking of an unvented system, if this makes a difference.

Cheers,

Joe

32mm mdpe is about 26mm internal dia so not far off

also as you have 3 bathrooms may worth upgrading the mains circuit to 28mm to the unvented / first floor

On longer runs frictional losses mount up so even though it isn't intuitive, despite a smaller pipe diameter inside the house, having a larger main will still provide some improvement in performance.
