Firstly, I thank those who corrected me regarding modulating oil boiler. This belief arose from a search, bringing WB Heatsave to the fore, and their literature claiming a heatronic 4i control unit which, "intelligently responds to heat and heat water demands."
Interestingly, WB in contesting the 7% Erp penalty, claim, "no great effect on efficiency between an on/off boiler and a modulating boiler"
My negative experience of gas modulation results from coupling a respected boiler with convector style low surface temperature rads. Volume and temperature of convection depends on temp. of fins within rads. Water at 74 gives room temp of 22. Setting flame to 5 bars gives water temp of 84 confirming capacity to meet extreme cold weather demand. Unfortunately, what ever temperature is set by going into service mode, the boiler reverts to modulation giving 64 on a 2 bar flame. All comments regarding which part of the modular control I should take my hammer to gratefully received.

I spoke of taking my hammer to the boiler to avoid inappropriate discussion on open forum.
Only those who know me would deem me capable of such action.
