im 23, ran my own business for the last 4 years, but fancied a change, so ive decided to look in to plumbing.

a mate of mine did plumbing and heating and got his NVQ, he said he had to get a job with a plumber and build a portfolio as he went along...

ive managed to get a placment with a plumber, but what exactly do i need to do to get my NVQ? should i have gone through an exam center to get my placment or have i done the right thing getting my own placment?? 😕

cheers

I'm not 100% on this but you've got to sign on at a college and start the city and guilds, most colleges will not take you on without being attached to a plumber. So your half way there, your quite right about the portfolio, keep pictures of everything you do as this is required.

If I were you, my next step would be talking to Learning direct and a local college.

Good Luck🙂

would you say a NVQ is essential?
once trained up, i would be setting up self employed rather than working for a firm if that makes any difference?

secret sqirrell is right thats the way to do it, sign up for train for skills at college and keep working with plumber for a couple of years then you will be on your way.

hi,You have done the hard part getting a work placement.Secret Squirrel is right, usually done as part of a 'package'with CG 6129 and assessment for NVQ has been priced at £300-600 on here on one of the threads.Good to have a qualification if you are to develope your career and this allows you to move on to a higher qualification to do Gas work.
