Hi guys,

Just moved into a new flat and have found that the towel radiator in the bathroom has no thermostat fitted but all other radiators do, i have seen this before when its the last radiator in the chain so to speak. The back boiler has a thermostat going from low to high. If i am correct then if i adjust the back boiler thermostat then this will have a knock on effect on all radiators? When the boiler is set to low the towel radiator is fine, nice and warm, when i increase the boiler the towel radiator gets very warm indeed, the only thing on the towel radiator is two knobs with + and - on either side but no thermostat. Its a ladder style towel radiator and there really is no room at all to fit any thermostats i have seen and is it ok to fit a thermostat on the last radiator to the boiler? Also is it ok to not have a thermostat on the towel radiator? would it damage it? Any help would be fantastic!! Thank you 😀

this will be your bypass radiator, if the system doesnt have a bypass fitted then there needs to be a radiator which can't close down to let the water circulate, to stop the system from overheating and damage to the pump.

You can fit a TRV if you fit a bypass, or you can swap it with another radiator and make another rad the bypass. The bypass radiator in my house is in the hall

Hi,

Thank you for the reply! If I leave it alone just now is it ok? Does it matter than the towel radiator is the bypass? I can't get access without destroying all brand new floors, the option of swapping the hall one sounds good, I would assume I would just remove the thermostat and fit just the same knob as other side? I know rads have in and out, the towel radiator is on a tiled floor and I have no idea which is which, as long as I know it's ok just now then I can plan fir a change soon. Thanks again

you would fit 2 lockshield valves fully open on the hall one, then you can fit a thermostatic rad valve on the towel rail. You wouldnt need to rip up tiled floors or anything like that, just drain system replace valves and fill it up again simples. To find out which one is the flow on the towel rail feel the pipes and what ever one gets hotter first then thats your flow and that is where you fit the TRV.

personnally i would leave it as it is, What happens as soon a you run a bath or have a shower? the room gets up to temp and the t.r.v shuts down, also in the warmer months you can wind your t.r.v's down around the house and use the towel warmer all year round, It seems to have been the hallway rad for years to use as the bypass but surely you want to utilise the towel warmer throughout the year?

Hi,

Thanks for the reply, I see your point and yes I will use the towel rad all year round and will turn down other rads, it was just winter I was thinking of, if it gets really cold then I would need to adjust my thermostat of back boiler thus increasing the temp to the towel rail, but I see your point in that when I use the towel rail if I change then my hall rad will come on! Hmm wouldn't want that in summer. Is the way it is set just now ok? I mean does it matter the towel rail has no thermostat?

Thanks for the help

there is nothing wrong with the current set up, this will be so you can shut off all radiators in the summer and still have a hot towel rail to dry out your towels.

BUT if you really wanted to fit TRV, you could add an automatic by-pass valve into the system to allow water to circulate or make another radiator the bypass

Trv don't have to be on flow
