View the thread, titled "Oil fired central heating boiler issue ?" which is posted in Boiler Advice Forum on UK Plumbers Forums.

Hi,

Over the past few months, my wife and I have noticed a constant pulsing sound throughout the house which is particularly noisy at night (this could be as a result of us noticing the sound more when there is less environmental noise). Unfortunately, it is severely disrupting our sleep, so we are desperate to get to the bottom of what might be causing it. We have been in contact with electricians, plumbers and a leak detection service who have been unable to get to the bottom of the issue.

We have a pressurised water system, oil fired central heating and thermal solar panels for hot water. One thing that we have noticed is that the central heating needs topping up quite regularly. Sometimes it can lose pressure from 1.5 bar to 0.5 overnight, on other occasions it can lose 0.2 bar over a week but it all seems strange, as I believe typically a central heating system should only need to be topped up once or twice a year.

The leak detector engineer did highlight that the pipe at the back of the boiler was leaking more water than it should do and there have been occasions when there appears to be smoke/steam coming out of the emission pipe, even when it is mild. We have also had our pump replaced over recent months.

We have someone coming out to service the boiler, and it is now 16 years old so wondered if the root cause of both the noise and the pressure dropping could be related to the boiler itself?

Thanks in advance,

Not enough info in the post.

What boiler? When was it last serviced? Do you run it overnight? Do you run immersions overnight? Etc etc etc.

Thanks Simon, as you can tell I am not an expert by any means! The boiler is Firebird Enviromax C35KW. It was serviced just under a year ago. At the moment we only boost the heating as and when required and never overnight. We do sometimes leave the immersion on overnight, but not frequently and the pulsing noise can be heard 24 x 7, more so when the heating is switched off.

Loss of pressure could be expansion vessel, but should be checked and repressured with a service. Could be that the pump continues to run?
Difficult one without having eyes (and ears) on.

Np Simon. Hoping to get the boiler engineer out again next week, so hopefully he might be able to pinpoint the issue. Thanks again.
