I'm working with an old cast iron stack that has two cast iron bosses built into it.
Currently one has a 40mm waste pipe going in, the other 32.

Thing is they're both 50mm in external diameter and deep. I can only find boss adaptors that are 62mm diameter and ~25mm deep - this one is about 40mm deep.

Any suggestions?

Will be threaded if cast iron so remove the male iron

If plastic 2” coupling

There is no male iron and no plastic in sight.

The bosses are built into the main soil pipe - the rubber adaptors are pushed in.

This is a 50's build.

Photo attached - it has a 40mm cap shoved in at the moment.

Any chance of a picture of the collar below just out of frame and a picture of the boss eg in focus / best you can do

Collars are irrelevant really - one below is just like the one in shot - there's another boss just below. I can't touch the pipe itself as it's a shared pipe in a block of flats.

Looks like both were welded to the pipe when the property was built - the hole into the pipe is much smaller than the boss diameter so clearly cut in.

They look like the socket has been removed to me but I could be wrong as the photo is not the best focus.

I have no idea what you mean by socket.

The part sticking out is cast iron - there's a hole into the main pipe at the back which is pretty rusty - don't know if that's just from here, or rust from higher up the pipe collecting in the hole.

There's no thread on the metal work - it's ridged as is the rubber adaptor which is the perfect size for the hole, so this isn't a cowboy job.

I'm really not sure what else I can tell you or show you. I think either you've come across this type of fitting before, or you haven't.

Is the rubber boss still useable? If so, will it except a 40mm waste pipe or a 50mm waste pipe?

There looks to be lead or a caulking between the 40mm cap and the inner edge of the boss on the pipe.
I've seen plenty of cast bossed pipes that were threaded, but never a non threaded one.

They are either 2", 1½" or 1¼" BSP,
The one in the photo looks to be 2" and has possibly had a smaller pipe, maybe copper at the time, caulked into the fitting, it's probably threaded under the caulk.

If not then one solution would be to use a Fernco reducing coupler on the outside of the cast boss(es) and onto the new waste pipe.

The one pictured won't have been welded onsite they came / come on a short section of pipe as below,

Thanks for the replies guys

As I mentioned there's two of them - the top one had a 32mm waste pipe slotted into it, the lower one, 40mm.

I decided to put both the sink and bath waste into the 40mm and cap off the 32mm, so I removed the rubber adaptor - it was still dribbling this morning so I took it out again and this time had a real good look inside. Definitely not threaded in there - some chunky ridges, matched by the rubber adaptor. There's nothing else in there either.

In the end I put a ring of plumbers mate at the back and pushed the rubber back in, then pushed a 32mm pipe with a rubber bong pushed into it, into the middle. It seems to be sealed.

The bottom one I left the rubber alone and just put some plumbers mate around the new pipe. That also seems ok.

Sometimes it's best to leave things alone if they're not leaking 😀

Found the part now - except nobody has it in stock
