Was today at a public showroom djust finishing off some plumbing, when another plumber turned up to do what i would class as catering /commercial which i am not.Firstly the pipe supply is 35 mm which goes back to commercial meter which wasnt disconnected or even turned off. The op had turned off nearest lever valve to area he was working and then soldered quite happily away altering new pipework,Secondly he never had catering and i would class this as catering as its a commercial kitchen ,so am i wrong in presuming catering ticket not needed??
Lastly been on enough big sites to have idea how to purge commercial gas as in big box out side with hose , this never happened on purge with this guy just case of turning nearest lever back on
My personal opinion is that it went against everything i have been taught and probably should be reported but what you guys think??.

Aint it to do with installation volume? I thought anything under 0.35 cu. m was ok to work on with domestic? If he's put his name on the paperwork then he will get nailed if anything goes wrong. As you say, you haven't got your commercial so I guess as long as you can't see anything obvious that would cause concern, I would stick to my own job and hope he is competent to do his.

Reported ? To whom and by whom?

Examples of RIDDOR reportable items are listed in the unsafe situations handbook.

Even so, one also has to apply a certain amount of personal and professional judgement as to what to report.

There is theoretical and real world gas engineering and sometimes the two are slightly at variance !

He must take responsibility for the work he does as you do for yours.

Thats it really..

When i say report the op i mean not to riddor as more a case of inspection needed, watching him work personally felt unsafe as anyone could have turned gas on whilst he was soldering away . At very least imo remove, cap meter , besides its third time in as many weeks have come across works of his and personally think its of unsatisfactory standard , maybe i was taught better and he is just rough .

If theres a valve in the line theres no need to remove the meter to solder after the valve just dis from valve
also only that line needs purging not the whole instalation id assume it to be the same for commercial
as a example i wouldnt remove the meter to change a hob that had a service valve and although i would theres no need to do full tightness test just the section youve worked on
THERES PROBABLY A REQUIREMENT TO LOCK THE VALVE CLOSED OR AT LEAST LABEL IT IF ITS REMOTE FROM WHERE YOUR WORKING

When you say line needs purging do you mean that just to the point of install he was doing? If thats the case what about the other two boilers upstairs , water heater ,another system boiler and probably 1 other somewhere. Not looking to start any trouble as he was alright lad but was quite surprisedas was never taught nor with the commercial guys have helped never seen anyone work this way . Like i said thought he was doing few no no's and would he work like that under inspection?
Always learning in this game and if that is o.k with what he was doing then fair play
