Hi all,

I'm a new member of the site but need some advice about fitting a pop-up basin waste.
It comes supplied with a foam type washer to fit between the top flange and the ceramic basin and a rubber washer to fit between the bottom of the basin and the bottom of the waste fitting which screws onto the top section with the flange.
All good so far you would think but, and here is my dilemma, a lot of people suggest discarding the top washer and putting a thick bead of Plumbers Mait between the flange and the ceramic, then putting a bead of silicon sealant between the rubber washer and the bottom of the basin but still use the rubber washer, then tightening up the waste, and they suggest doing this because a lot of basins are mishaped and the washers they supply fail to make watertight seals.

Any thoughts about doing the job as described above using Plumbers Mait or should I just use the washers supplied. Thanks.

Would forget about using plumbers mate, it is not that matey

The top foam washer can be used or not, I prefer a bead of silicon round for abetter seal and when bedded in just wipe of any excess, the bottom rubber should seal ok with not sealant ,I have not had one leak, if you use silicon ,only use a slight wear over top of rubber, no need for more than that,do not over tighten,no need to

imho

as ajl says 🙂

I only use silicone at the top and rubber at the bottom, usually fine unless the basin has an overflow and then i use a bit of silicone to be on the safe side and plumbers mate isnt that bad, its like marmite you either love it or hate it. I don't mind it tbh

Hi Tom, the pop-up part was only to explain that it's not a standard waste which just has a bottom washer and a locking nut, this waste has a bottom section with the bit on the side for the pop-up rod to fit in, so I was just wondering if I should treat it ant differently to a standard waste without a pop-up.
Thanks.

In the video he says the problem with silicone is "if you don't put enough on [round the top flange] it won't seal." Well my top tip for that is.....put enough on.

When you tighten it up some will bulge out. Wipe it off with several consecutive tissues. Let it set, 10-15 mins to develop a skin is usually enough.

For the underside I use silicone too but just as a fail-safe because a leaking waste is annoying and you don't see it so I just give it the old silicone.

Never owned or used any plumbers mate. I don't know how they stay in business. We're all plumbers on here and about 1 in 10 uses it.

The fact it's a pop-up will make no difference, just remember to install the pop-up arrangement correctly as per the TOTALLY NON-EXISTANT instructions. Seriously has anyone ever received a pop-up waste with assembly instructions?

Discard both washers, you do not need either. Put a thin seal of silicone on the top and then put a larger seal on the backnut. Tighten up with grips then wipe away excess and smooth off.

(just seen same post above!)

Perfect finish every time

As said really. as regards video, this is a plug waste not pop up,use silicon the same in sealing bottom of waste but would mention use no washer if you wish or as I do, use polly washer, would not use rubber washer as in video, all it will do is distort
imho

As above comments, clear silicon for me, used plumbers mate years ago but not keen now. When i do use it i mix it with some hawk white as it gives it a bit more stick.

Will go with silicon as that's what the majority are saying, thanks to all for the advice it's much appreciated.

If you've never done one before be prepared to assemble it a number of different ways, trial and error. Many come with different bits to others and the way it's assembled in the package may well just be what was best for transit.

I've been having a good look at it and I've sussed out how to assemble it now so I'm happy with that bit, it was the washer on the top that was the main concern because it makes the flange stand proud of the basin surface and it looks rubbish, so i'll forget using that and use silicone instead. Many thanks
