Evening lads, I was wondering how much knowledge and experince you guys have with working with various pressing tools. The reason I ask is that I have been asked to do a costing for buying one out right and work out potential savings of having this in our arsenal of tools 🙂

It currently stands that a 110v ridgid press tool with all heads from 1/2" up to 3" (15-72mm i belive) would cost around 8.5k with the vat thats around 2k more than the threading tool cost.

I know that there is time saving to be made but not sure how much, I would like to think it is twice as fast as threading.

My questions are:

1) What are the best value fittings to buy Mapress or Express(heard horror stories about express)

2) Best Vendors ? (would like to find better terms than we have at bss and pipe centre)

3) Anyone recently switched over to pressing from iron and have some info ~?

thanks in advance

Uponor are really good have used on 3 different sites

Hi sage, we bought our REMS pressed about 2 years ago with heads from 1/2 to 2". Use it nearly every day, bit we did blow it up about 3 months after using it but was replaced next day. It's the rechargeable battery type, think it cost around the £2k mark. We use the geberit fittings as they are the cheapest and pretty decent quality. Get the fittings from pipe centre and bss. a lot easier than threading!!

get a 110v one for about a grand think thats a rems if i recall, rigid is normally dearer

mapress are usually on the shelf fittings unless they are the bigger size

imho iron is tried and tested

thanks for the input, I am reluctant to move away from iron as I knjow it will stand the test of time the downside is it takes so long, and atm we have a lots of work and dont want to take another fitter on (not even a subby) the press tool might be the answer to our (happy) problem 🙂

But fo large plan rooms im just not sold on the pressing idea just yet 🙂 as always it comes down to numbers 🙂

@ Danny
How do you find the REMS tool ? Geberit are the cheapest fittings ? I thought the xpress stuff was?

thanks again all 🙂

EDIT: will check out uponor also 🙂

I don't have many problems with it at all, the one thing that can be a pain is getting the REMS tool into small spaces but if you do a lot of iron you you will know that if preform some fittings it's easier that way. Xpress fittings I haven't used too much we had one that didn't clamp properly so haven't used them since, but geberit good quality at a fairly decent price.

we use the x-press fittings and not had any problems with them, BSS were selling the full REMS kit, 2 batteries, 15mm - 2" heads all for £1400. We do alot of plantrooms and find the press kit much quicker, cleaner and easier than using steel. If you dont want to use copper then you can use Carbon Steel!!

Hire the kit for a week to try it out.
BSS hire it gear is good. If you want to install it quickly then you will also need a good cutting machine. The Rems cento is great.

thanks for all the feedback have the account manager of BSS coming in to see me tomorrow so I'll be sure to see what pressing tool/deals is avaible 🙂
