I got a call to a glowworm 24 CXI that had been drained down as the property had been sold. Well the first thing I did was try and get a display or neon light on which I could not do , I checked I was getting 240v into boiler which was ok , I then checked internal fuse on pcb which was fine, I could not get any display or neon on the display , I checked the manually reset on the boiler over heat stat which was ok. I then noticed the fan was pulsing on and off , I presume this could be the main board or and the fan causing this problem

i think Steve diamond gas had this fault on the same boiler a few weeks ago that was the pcb drop him a pm

Cheers Gasman , The guy is an estate agent and he called me this morning asking me was I working and would I recommission this boiler and give it a gas cert, He said it had all been turned off and should be an easy job, LOL. I have told him it was the PCB and or the fan which I suspect would be cheaper getting a BG one off repair as the parts could be expensive, also the flue is boxed in for 15 foot in his front room

personally i dont think we should be giving BG any work

they are a bunch of _______ (fill in the blank)

i had this same problem with a 30cxi last year, call for heat and the fan pulsed on for 1 sec off for maybe half a second on off on off etc that was a board fault. changed the main board and everything was fine, cant remember the display being blank though.

I believe they have updated the pcb's for these recently to remove the need for the second 'fan control' board it was mighty expensive though from memory.

Simon I know what you are saying but if I go to a boiler breakdown and a customer needs say £300 parts plus say labour of £200 is it not better to pass the job over to BG as it will cost them time and money all for a fixed price of £89 . Customer well happy and hopefully will come back to me when BG try and rip them off with a new boiler

I normally pass off jobs like that to glowworm themselves for a fixed price repair rather than let BG have the details and give the customer the hard sell an a maintenance contract.

BG can only do X amount and if I and other engineers can pass on troublesome jobs where loads of parts and loads time spent on drain down etc . These jobs cost BG big time imho

I paid £138 plus vat for a 30 cxi board this week, no display fan wasnt pulsing though.

I used to tell customers about the one off fee but was told it has now changed ? £89 only applies if repaired within 1 hour ?????

Most of my customers prefer to use me as they can trust me to turn up when promised, not have to wait in all day, leave a key somewhere safe for me ect.

To a lot of people that is worth a lot and maybe we should sell ourselves a little bit more, rather than say it will be cheaper for you to.......

Your right, British Gas were counting on a lot of the repairs to be simple, but have found this not to be the case. Probably due to a lot of guys like you recommending them when the job is expensive/difficult.

So now they've introduced a three tier system, where if the fault is repaired within the first hour it will cost £89ish depending on region, if two hours £*** and 3 hours or more it will be £350+?

Oh and those of you that are recommending remember that their 'engineers' are trained as sales people as well. So you may find that you've lost your customer forever to a homecare plan.

Thanks all for the info I was not aware of that no more recommending BG then lol. I had a mate in the pub and he was going to get BG to do a combi change and was quoted 3K and ended up getting another local firm I know to do it for 2k , I spoke to the guy installing it and he told me BG get him to do installs sometimes and they have to wear BG jumpers but arrive in their sign written van, he even has done jobs for BG ,where he had quoted 1K cheaper

I generally pass them to the manufacturers when they get expensive.

A grand cheaper and they still go with bg that is insane.

There was a story that I heard once of a woman who wanted a new boiler. She got 3 quotes 1 from British Gas and 2 from other independant traders. British Gas came in at about £1500 more expensive than the others.

She considered all the quotes and in the end went with British Gas because she thought as they were a big company she could trust them and the fitter would do a good job, whereas she didn't know what to expect with the others.

Install day came and guess who the fitter was, one of the guys that quoted, who also did subcontracting for British Gas. She wasn't happy.
