Ian Earnshaw

First of all, thanks to those of you who gave me the welcome.
1st proper post
I have to install a shower pump in a loft, airing cupboard in kids bedroom so loft only option. My question is how do I, other than removing insulation under the pump or fitting a frost watcher close by, stop it from freezing? Thanks in advance, Ian

I think those shower pumps are expensive, noisy, unreliable and unprofessional. If a customer every asks me for one I talk them into an unvented cylinder, it wont make a noise, fail, use electric and you get better pressure everywhere and it solves your freezing problem.

The way I understand it is any pump can go in the loft as long as its installed properly?

I've installed many Stuart Turner pumps in lofts including my own. Never had a problem with one freezing up. As S.T. sya in the literature that they can be installed up there I assume that the pump casing itself provides enough insulation.

If you're not sure phone S.T. they are very helpful.

Stick the pump on a shelf above the cylinder, or on the cylinder floor... Get a centrifugal pump from salamander instead of regenerative one... I could not believe how much quieter they are!!

The problem with the airing cupboard is that its in the boys bedroom, 2 of em and crazy! Any noise would wake them up and ww3! I asked for a price to supply & fit a mains pressure cylinder from a decent plumber I know & trust (I don't have unvented cert) and he came back with £1800??? I'm now seriously thinking about recommending an aqualisa digital quartz, I know it doesnt make a difference to freezing but at least its actually built for a loft, unlike a shower pump with its air lock issues
