Hi all,

I am looking at buying a property which has corrosion on one of the upstairs radiators. As shown below.

I know nothing about plumbing so how serious is this? I appreciate it is one photo but the rest of the house looks in good condition (it's a 1940s build). The bathroom and kitchen have recently been replaced so could this have caused a change in the pH level of the system? Can I use chemicals to halt the corrosion? How long does a chemical regime (with regular updates) keep the problem at bay?
It is a Worcester boiler which from some of the threads on here may include aluminium parts is this unsuitable for chemicals?

Many thanks to everyone for their advice. I am hoping to get a professional to look into it as well.

system probably full of rust and sludge, adjust house price for new heating system as not worth messing with imho

Thanks for the fast reply Lame plumber. This was what I feared, I'll see if I can get more money off. Thanks

Thanks AWheating. We've already knocked them down on price so I'll see if they can take some of this off too. If they agree in principle I'll get a full quote off someone. Thanks again.

You can bet all the rads will be paper thin at some point near the bottom, having been rotting away from the inside for years. The last thing you want is for them to all start leaking rusty brown water all over the place. Not to mention all the sludge which lame plumber mentioned.

Nailseaboy , don't forget if you need a couple of quotes to put a post in our " I need a plumber " section we might be able to help you out .

You got the sds cordless? It's a beast isn't it!

I have not had the chance to try out the rad hammer yet, I have heard good things about them for power flushing tho! Supposed to speed it up & get alot more sludge out!

Im gonna run the hose pipe through the old scrap rads in the garden, then put the hammer on & see if it works!

Yea brilliant, I'll only be using it for upto 10mm bits though anything bigger it's the 240v.
