hello lads, ive been having problems for months with my sisters burner locking out. most of the time when im there it doesnt happen. actually it doesnt tend to lock out, after running for maybe an hour, when it tries to fire, it fires for about 2 seconds then tries again after ten seconds but only fires for two seconds and it keeps doing this continuously until you switch it off then back on again. i did email riello about it months ago and their response was possible stat problem.... i have changed the photocell and control box to no avail. i asked the lecturer who tought me oil burner servicing what he tought. he said it sounde like the coil causing problems when hot or else the burner is been starved of oil. i changed the coil but it still does it. i have simulated the burner being starved of oil by throttling the oil valve. it then does the same thing but it locks out after a couple of minutes, whereas normally it doesnt lock out. anyone any ideas?

Not au fait with this boiler, but most conventional boilers have an ignition pressure. I'd check the inleet pressure, gas rate for a start

It's an oil burner. 🙂

What's the burner set up like? CO2, oil pressure ok, condition of nozzle? Just off the top of my head I would have said photocell, but start at beginning. You only need a motor and pump for it to be a new burner.

As they say in Dragons Den....."I'm out"!!

First point is, if it actually goes to lockout on control box, then it is a burner or oil issue, and not the stat. Going by what you say, I would check the oil pump as Riello 40s are normally reliable. My experience of them is, providing oil flowing ok & no water in it , nozzle good , photo cell clean, and combustion half decent, then it's nearly always oil pump. They slip inside intermittently or can jam at times. It is possible to open them to check if it seems it is probably at fault. Problems with Riello 40 in order of likelyhood are Oil pump first, motor capacitor next, the control box & cell occasionally, the very odd burned out motor & most rare is solenoids ( unlike other solenoids ). That's assuming you check all the obvious, including motor bearings. It is unlikely that you have replaced the cell or box with new one having exactly the same fault, so you have ruled those out. Just check the oil filters & that there is some flow of oil from oil hose & I would say oil pump. I buy & use plenty oil pumps & capacitors for them.

i hear what your saying best about pump, but is seems to happen after around an hour every time, then the fan is running consistently and the burner does fire for a couple of seconds every ten seconds so the pump is building the pressure up. also why is it that when i switch the burner off and back on it runs grand for another hour. i didnt check motor bearings but i doubt theyre responsible

The burner firing for a couple of secs every 10secs is what a faulty oil pump can do. When you are turning burner off & then on again, this may be making the oil pump engage inside & work for a while. Trust me, I have seen this a lot with Riellos pumps, they can intermittently jam, or miss firing, or not fire at all. Sometimes the ram door "shakes" open & closed or not open when pump fault but not always. If you have a pump then it is 5 min job. 8 + 12 mm spanners + 15 mm for oil hose ( which may need renewed). The burner running for an hour & flame cutting out, is usually solenoid or c. box in other makes of burners, but not necessarily in Riellos. I think that is where a lot of people think, often wrongly, electrical.

thanks best. i have a couple of old riello burners, ill take the pump off one and give it a go

It could be that one of the new parts you put on is faulty that has happened to me loads of times, try another photocell that you know is ok.
