Anybody gemmed up at all on these?

went to a house today to see about putting in a new gas feed for cooker... cust had paid a local builder to take down a load bearing wall in the kitchen and put an rsj in..

we got chatting about it, and it turns out theres been no Structural engineer involved or building control as far as they are aware.

i understood this was a requirement... or can the builder size the rsj and approve it themselves if they are qualified too.... (or am I being niave?)

i noticed no pad stones had been installed but not being up on this not sure if they are a Legal? requirement

building regs and building inspectors normally ask for a certain spec, sounds dodgy TBH

Lots of people just look up the manufacturers table, and then oversize by one or two sizes.

The difference in cost is much cheaper than paying a structural engineer to work out the minimum.

Anything structural needs building regs, and building control will want to see structural calculations. Saw a steel beam a few weeks back, been installed by stevie wonder. No concrete pads and the steel ran through into the chimney, which had a multi flue stove installed with no liner. Raised concerns with cust but was told it had been passed. I said I doubted that very much.

local pub/hotel used imported labour a year or so back. catalogue of errors, one being an rsj on its side - so the bricks on it stayed in place better 🙂, another whilst building control was shutting them down, was fitting a large window lintel, concrete version, it was hard to get in - so laddo cut it in half, popped both bits in then tuck a broom underneath as it all dried out🙂🙂🙂 best bit was the several tons of cement being delivered in their lunch break, someone said leave it in the hall and they'll move it after lunch - that large pile sat there for weeks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Very rough local builder in the late 70's fitted RSJ in a kitchen ceiling. It was too short so he left one end blocked up on top of the customers Welsh Dresser. This was the same guy that built an extension with the block work starting directly on the grass in the back garden.
