The last one I had was about three weeks ago. Blocked number on the office phone. He claimed to be from Kids Safe (or similar sounding). Basically wanted us to stump up money for them to produce a board game in the local schools. I said no thanks and he hung up.
I went online and googled it, This scam has been around for a few years apparently.

had one a couple of weeks ago, something to do with calenders. look out for that one!.

Anyone trying to sell you advertising space etc. over the phone and trying to push you to sign up there and then is likely to be dodgy. I always ask them to send details by post so that I can peruse the fine print before making a decision. To date not one has sent me any info.

Also anyone offering you a service contract for a large upfront payment is to be viewed with suspicion.

A couple of time actually -

They said 'oh we need a plumber to work for fire/police department staff'

Absolute crock! The last guy even offered me free advertising till the new year . . . .

They don't approach you like it is advertising however - beware!

Copied of the TPS website!!!

Scams
There are also companies, usually operating from overseas that are running scams. One of the most common is based on a bogus PC support service where their aim is to get you to pay for an unnecessary service or gain access to personal information on your PC. Another is where they claim to be from TPS and ask for a payment for the service. Companies running scams like this from overseas are usually outside of the authority of the UK regulators and law. (See our section of Bogus TPS Calls)
SPAM SMS
Although SPAM SMS messages are not covered by the same legislation that regulates live sales and marketing calls we often hear about them because they are received on your phone. A company should only send you an SMS is you have given them prior permission. Identifying the companies that send these texts can be difficult for the same reasons as mentioned above. But you can report these to the Information Commissioners Office (ICO) on the following website Complain - Data Protection, Freedom of Information, Marketing - ICO
If the text is from an unknown company you should report the text message to your network operator, who may be able to prevent further messages from the originating number. You can either contact your network operator.s customer services or use one of the reporting numbers below:

Orange, O2 and T-Mobile: Forward the SMS to 7726
Vodafone: Forward the SMS to 7726 or 87726
Three: Forward the SMS to 7726 or 37726

How or is there a way to stop the calls and texts to the mobile though??

Your replies will make interesting reading especially as i've had 6 this morning!!!

Throw it out the window.🙂

Had a new one through today. Had an e-mail purporting to be from HMRC telling me that I had a £825 tax rebate due to me and should log on to give my details so that I could receive payment direct into my bank account. A check on the site adress revealed it had nothing to do with HMRC and was probably harvesting bank account details.

I use a handy little tool (think it's called 'Link Alert') which you can download in 2 seconds from Firefox Add-ons, it displays the url address of a link so you can see where it's taking you before you actually click it.

Edit: Oops, just realised I added the arrow pointing to the wrong link. You get the idea though.

Update: It's called URL Tooltip

Scam Alert

If like me you use free business listing's on the internet yelp, yalwa etc etc. You will know from time to time you will get calls to update your info with them.
Over the past couple of weeks have had calls from unknown listers saying they wish to update info to carry on listing and when asked is it free they say no you paid last year. When challenged they put the phone down. Beware this is a scam.

Did you report them to the relevant authorities? Just that a lot of people notice scams like this and don't do anything about it which allows them to carry on.

Well I've had at least 10 calls from these guys going back 5 years now maybe more. They usually have Scouse accents and have said they are from the metropolitan police, fire service and ambulance service. I knew it was a scam from the start because the police could never endorse a blooming plumber..lol. I would keep them on the phone for as long as possible and just wind them up, pretending I was a legit customer. Usually when I confront them they show their true colours-ones threatened to come where I live.

i contacted the police about it and they made me feel like an absolute **** for reporting it. They said there was nothing they could do. So these guys a free to rip people off-I know 2 who've fallen for it.

sad state of affairs

This Service Magic, is it a worldwide thing? Just that having googled 'Service Magic Scam' I find complaints from here, America and other places. Seems they're now called Home Advisor.

when i advertised in yellow pages a good few years back,i use to get numerous calls every week with bogus charities wanting to supply wall planners they wanted £375 of me to send out ten thousand of these to local businesses and nhs i said no but they sent out two wall planners with my business logo on it out of the yellow pages, i then phoned all the people advertised on the wall planner and they said they had been hounded too and paid out money, every time i phoned this charity called kind kids in need or something i always got the same woman on the phone from liverpool there was back ground noise ie office workers chatting and phones ringing but every time i phoned it was the same tape playing so all of us on the wall planner got together and threatened court action and they disappeared i also get the police ambulance and fire department looking for plumbers to do work for them i am supposed to be recomended lol just another scam. hang up on them dont be conned. one hair dresser i know had been paying out £300 odd quid year after year if she did not send money they hounded her on the phone it turned out she was getting sent 2 wall planners only and this charity kind did not send any out to the public what so ever so keep an eye out for these scams folks we soon got rid off them for the hairdresser she was just a young lass trying to go it alone and she thought she was advertising but was well conned .

Sounds like the latest shower of reptiles.....

Just had a message from a girl saying she was from "Corgi Admin" telling me to ring her back as I was being awarded a contract for 300 jobs this year.

The number was 01383628700, a Dunfermline number, at one time the business was Corgi Boiler Maintenance, so this is how they are getting away with claiming to be from Corgi.

The actual business went into recievership in 2009.

Be warned, pass it on to any other forums you use.

Funnily enough I was contacted early last year, police, fire and ambulance service magazine, all sounded legit, guy wanted £15.00 up front so paid it (stuipd i know) then the magazine did arrive and was very very basic and full of spelling mistakes and errors. I spoke to the police and they had never heard of it (suprise suprise). I then got a call from a guy in liverpool who had heard the company had been taken to court and he was getting his money back after he paid it all!!!!

Me? I walked away £15 down the swanny but it could have been worse, now all i get is "I can get you on the first page of google".......it never ends!

UK CORPORATE PORTAL 2013

Received a letter from GERMANY today and thought I'd put a warning on here.

Starts off telling you that due to the change to the EU economic package (?!) all companies are obligated to provide their Vat Number and this lovely company require you to return the enclosed form with your details - at no cost (ahem)
Turn to page 2 and you will find in the small print (!) that you will actually be charged £797 anually and this will apply for the next 3years plus a further year if not terminated in writing !!!!!!!

They don't ask for bank details at this stage but you are invoiced and hounded for the fees because you will have signed a "legally binding" document and......... "German Law applies"

Ignore it.

Combined Maintenance Services require a Heating & Plumbing Engineer to maintain a 12 month contract for a minimum of 390 domestic rental properties within the “M” Postcode area.

This came through the other day - £2100 upfront.

I get at least 1 email a month from bogus companies offering 'contracts' to service multiple properties for their 'clients', having investigated some of them (who charge between £1750 - £2100 + vat), I have noticed most give Scottish addresses with London head office details, they usually have a website which looks authentic, where they show as fraudulent is through the addresses given (One was a Kebab house, which came up on google maps street view), they will often publish large companies details as 'their' clients, but if you ring the clients, they have often never heard of them and will chase the website owners down to remove the links.

If anyone feels that they are getting conned, please use the link to Trading Standards I've put up above as a sticky and report them.

Only by reporting them can we make the their business unprofitable.

I have had a contract with Combined Maintenance to look over i have been through this before so was just playing them along Guess what im on the shortlist again !!!!!!! what a bunch of jokers but will play them along i have paid someone to look into these and have some interesting facts and will post them next week when i get the info back from trading standards..... Always scottish people you speak to

all the ones mentioned have been at it for years back in 1992 foresters/fire service mags were flogging their wares to schools etc, trading standards have failed to stop them in all this time!!

Aye, I've had the foresters on, telling me I was no 1 OFTEC/RGII in my area. While I might suspect that 'tis doubtful others would agree 🙂

We were all conned by Corgi, who sold the brand name and the registration database (all the customer/appliance details we HAD to provide by law) to a company in Scotland called Green Installer ltd, the now operate as Corgi Homeplan and send letters to our customers offering maintenance plans, for this reason I havn't used anything Corgi, and stopped my registration with them, I tweeted, emailed, and telephoned, they just denied it all, Corgi Direct will tell you they are nothing to do with Corgi Homeplan, they are seperate companies but CD sold some of the rights to the brand.

Re: Citizens Advice warning on phoney job scams...

Just had a call from "Corgi" checking my details which they knew, rattling them off.

Started to go into his spiel, next, where I told him I didn't think he was with Corgi and terminated the call.

Turns out this number 0800108579 is used by Yell...... so just be warned.

I have just replied to Ross Black Combined Maintenance Services Limited email received.
Retention deposit. Dream on, Scam

someone called jon henderson but same spiel as the other rubbish emails. content of email below.

Combined Maintenance Services require a Heating & Plumbing Engineer to maintain a 12 month contract for a minimum of 370 domestic rental properties within the “BD” Postcode area.

The Selected Engineer/Contractor will be required to look after the annual servicing for each property, along with offering a daily call out service between the hours of 9am – 5pm (Monday to Friday). All repairs and breakdowns will need to be covered by the chosen Contractor, as well as any resulting installations after the original breakdown.

Who we are:

Combined Maintenance Services Ltd is a property maintenance provider servicing a number of Clients within the UK ranging from private landlords to schools and social housing associations.

We are able to offer full property management and maintenance under the one roof and can cover every job required on both domestic and commercial properties ranging from a leak on the roof to a broken hinge on the garden fence.

At present, we do not employ any Engineers directly. Our business is focussed on only working with the best local Contractors on a sub contract basis to ensure that we get the best of both worlds - a full national coverage but also having the luxury of selecting from a bank of quality tradesman after a thorough vetting process.

What we have to offer:

  • A local domestic gas Contract within the “BD” Postcode area, for a minimum of 12 months.
  • Each rental property is legally required to have an annual Landlord Gas Safety Certificate.
  • There will be set prices for specific general works, i.e. CP12 & Boiler Service, daytime call outs.
  • 30 days notice is given for all planned maintenance.
  • 1 company/contractor will be selected. No sharing area or jobs with competitors.
  • Payments made within 30 days from date of receiving invoice.

What we need from you:

  • You must be locally based and able to cover the full “BD” Postcode area.
  • Gas Safe registration is paramount for all of the work.
  • A minimum £2 million Public Liability Insurance is required to take on work within these properties.
  • At least 1 years experience working within the Domestic Gas Industry.
  • There will be a requirement to cover daily breakdowns and resulting installations.
  • You will need space in your diary or the ability to accommodate the extra work necessary to enable smooth allocation of workflow with no confliction on your existing customers.

How we operate:

Combined Maintenance Services Ltd legally guarantees that the selected contractor will be provided with a minimum of 370 compliant properties within the “BD” Postcode area.

We take a yearly management fee from our Clients for every property that we look after meaning that we do not take any commission or percentages from any jobs issued to the selected contractor. Resulting in you, the contractor, maximising your earnings from the work provided in the Contract.

Contractor’s Retention Bond:

As with most maintenance contracts consisting of a guaranteed term and workload, CMS work with a retention deposit from the selected Contractor to ensure you are safe guarded along with our Clients for the 12 month contract period.

Because the chosen Contractor is given a legal contract that guarantees them the properties over the next 12 months, CMS require the same level of commitment in return to ensure that the work will be managed and carried out correctly and to reduce the risk to our company and our Client’s reputation.

The retention deposit is a one off payment that is secured within the contract over the next 12 months and is held until CMS and the chosen Contractor parts company.

Like any deposit, this can be refunded at any stage within the 12 month duration with a 30 day written notice period. No commission is taken from any work issued.

The retention deposit for the “BD” postcode contract is £2125.00

What to do next:

Should this be of interest to you, I am available to discuss, and I would encourage you to contact me using the details below. Additionally, if you would like to declare a formal interest and feel that your company fits the criteria set by our clients, you can log your details and forward using the following link. Thank you very much for your warnings regarding Combined Maintenance Services Ltd. I too today "won" a contract with these people for gas and plumbing CP12s and servicing within the SM postcode. I was requested to esign a contract which was previously signed by them and also to make a BACS or CHAPS payment of £2400 to be received by close of business today. This is prior to any work or any value of guaranteed work being established. The conversation I had was that I would be drip fed as not to flood my diary and over commit myself to my current work loads. If I have not had found this forum I probably would have gone ahead and signed the contract and paid the money. I am so grateful for your comments and warnings. Thank you for saving me £2,400 incl. VAT. Names mentioned are Ross Black, James, Phil and Jonathan are all names that are in the conference call which is very professional and sounds authentic and lasts around 45 mins. I am no mug but almost fell for this as at the end of it all when I was awarded the contract and asked how I felt about being awarded the contract I was jubilant. Since reading from this forum I am in no doubt that this too from Combined Maintenance Services Ltd is an utter scam. It did sound too good to be true but they are very convincing, they even have a twitter account!!
I take heed of all of what the forum have said and truly do believe that if anyone is unsure then these are these are the forums to look at. Thank you so much.

Glad you weren't mugged off.
Ps, I expect that your gratitude will extend to a donation towards the whip in 'The Plumbers Arms' 😉

I have had a recent call from a company FFFC which is a charity for cancer? I told them to send me some info about 2 weeks ago and I have had anything? Anyone know of this?

We had to remove it temporarily while the forum owner is making further enquiries.

Going on from here we need FIRM FACTUAL accounts of what you perceive to be scams and fraudsters.

Preferably backed up by correspondance.

All the facts I know are that I was emailed by this company offering work for a fee.

Their website claims they have been trading for 7 years.....

[h=4]Service & Maintenance Contractor Required[/h]
With our UK coverage and contacts in the property management sector, the CMS team are pleased to announce that they have an immediate requirement for a fully qualified gas engineers in the DH Postcodearea.

The selected candidate must have the availability to accommodate a rolling 12 month Contract, and be able to handle around 30 CP12’s per month, along with any resulting maintenance and installations.

With the freedom to book your own diary, along with no set deadlines to meet, the Contract is ideal for Self Employed contractors or small business looking for consistency over the next 12 months, along with a steady stream of income.

The Contract is on a rolling 12 month basis and legally guarantees to provide the chosen Contractor with at least 350 domestic rental properties to service and maintain. Additionally there will be a requirement for call outs, breakdowns, and any installation work needed.

A minimum of 1 years experience within the residential market is a must and we require the chosen Contractor to hold their own public liability cover up to the value of £2 million.

Contractors Retention Deposit:

Because the chosen Company is given a legal Contract that guarantees them the properties over the next 12 months, CMS need to ensure that the work will be managed and carried out correctly and to reduce the risk to our company and our Client’s reputation.

A one off retention deposit is secured within the contract over the next 12 months and is held until CMS and the chosen Engineer parts company.

Like any deposit, this can be refunded at any stage within the 12 month duration with a 30 day written notice period. No commission is taken from any work issued.

The retention deposit applicable to service the 350 properties on an annual basis and for you to have the sole rights within the area, to cover breakdowns and installations occurring in the properties is £1800+VAT.

What to do next:

Should this be of interest to you, I am available to discuss, and I would encourage you to contact me using the details below. Additionally, if you would like to declare a formal interest and feel that your company fits the criteria set by our Clients, you can log your details and forward using the following contact form

Not from corgi, they have a contract with you to do services at a set price and you invoice when done. No scam and they generally pay on time

I get a lot offering me jobs, they look good until you get to the money. Instead of a £ before the numbers they just put 1500 Pounds.

Listening to radio 4 today about a very similar going on with therapists via a website called commissioning.gp

On a smaller scale then what we're used to but the usual ££ for referrals. You've been specially selected in your area.

Thought I'd post it here 1 so people can take some comfort knowing it happens in all industry's and 2 because these guys seem to be getting a group together and going after their fraudsters. Perhaps one of the effected plumbers might care to try something similar

I had some guy ring me approx 2 months ago saying that he's putting together a leaflet that has all the bad tradesman/rogue traders on it and warns people not to use them. He then went on say that because I've got a good reputation he wants to encourage people to use me. He first told me this was free, but once he'd given me more information he slipped in that it was £250 for the year. I just hung up. A guy I know who owns a company renting out marquees and events equipment gets them all the time as well.

I get a lot offering me jobs, they look good until you get to the money. Instead of a £ before the numbers they just put 1500 Pounds.

That's usually PLUS the VAT.........

Is it worth alerting the Revenue and the VAT what these scammers are up to?
