Solar Thermal installed - does this look right?

Hi guy

I had solar thermal installed and wanted an expert opinion, had it installed today and its not working and the installer is to return. I get the impression when it comes to the electrical side the installer hasn’t the foggiest, he replaced the water valve and now my boiler does not heat up , the valve doesn’t turn on, he cut the cable off the old valve and joined the cables and put tape over it. Secondary the solar thermostat/control doesn’t work, so apparently both are faulty, well from what I have seen I don’t think its the equipment. The other cables he has joined as per the pic but no junction box, surely this is not safe. one of pics shows the solar thermostat going’s into the cylinder, should there be a cover? And after all that the installer asked me to double check the joined cable because he is colour blind! Any opinions appreciated. Pics attached. Thanks

You are right to be concerned. Don't pay the bill until the electrical work has been brought up to standard and tested by a qualified electrician.

Not until it's up to standard you're not. You might want to post some pics of the rest of the installation.

That amount should get you quite a nice piece of work IMO. Unless you're in London where it'll just about cover the call out fee and a new tap-washer... 🙂

Sadly unenclosed wago‘s are all too common these days.

it’s certainly not good practice or acceptable, nor is using tape over joints either

Hi , so just to get my head around, the valve is too close to the tundish and should be 600mm away?

No there’s no tundish it’s a maximum 600mm away from the red headed valve

There is another red top valve here behind cylinder, is this one or the one in front? well both are further than 600mm

Yep ideally you should have two separate tundishs as you can tell which one is dripping but it’s not regs
