Afternoon all!

Need a bit of help please!

Had a call to a job before crimbo, toilet not working, found to be syphonic WC not working correctly, flush ok but bowl just fills and then slowly returns to normal level, took cistern off and the syphonic part "the bomb" was well worn the washer fell off and in to bits. I think its older than me! a tasteful pampas grass colour!!
I found and fitted a new, but it still wont flush away properly, just fills then slowly returns to normal level!

Any asstiance would be much appreciated as the customer would verry much like to keep it as "it's the best one in the house" and when the floor was tiled they tiled round / over the WC.

Thanks Tony.

That is how syphonic toilets flush. The bowl appears to fill and then empties slowly. Is it actually not clearing solids or dirty water? or is it that you were expecting to see it flush like a regular toilet? I am not trying to be condescending just trying to establish if you were aware that they flush differently.

Thanks for the reply.

But I don't believe it to be a blockage as I have checked that avenue.

With a syphonic WC I was expecting to see the bowl fill up almost to the top but then rapidly empty, to then refill to normal level, but there appears to be no syphonic action!

Its the valve between the cistern and WC pan, jammed up. It should not be doing what has been described. On flushing it should suck the contents of the pan out then refill the pan. That why you always have a higher water level in a syphonic WC.

Thanks Reg man.

Yes that's what i'm expecting to see the contents getting sucked away!!

any tips on un-sticking the "bomb"? i have removed the cistern again and check ever thing was in place!

The valve is called an air extractor. I am guessing you have an old twyfords WC. You will need a new valve, which are still available if you order online.

Think so, all the numbers matched up and apart from the colour of the plastic bit it looks the same!
After the first go I did take it out an clean up all the rough bit from the molding but that made no difference to the flush!

Bit of silcone greese?

not sure how to check that!

I've not had much experience with syphonic! don't fit many of these any more!!

When refitting the cistern, only fit the bomb into the syphon a little to locate it, then when you fit it to the pan make sure it lines up with the hole, then lower the cistern into place and the bomb should be good to go.

Make sure you put the small domed washer on the centre tube of the bomb, with the tapered bit pointing upwards.
Also put the domed washer just onto the tube & let it slide up itself when you gently lower the cistern downwards.
Also first check for anything (bits of old washer etc) blocking the bomb or more likely the centre hole in toilet.
Do make sure the large domed pan to cistern washer is doing a good job of sealing also, as this can cause exactly the same problem on double siphonic loos as their bomb washer!

Will take a new doughnut washer along too, the old one didn't look in to bad nick!

Good luck! I have a double syhonic toilet & just fixed it for the first time. New bomb washer & a doughnut washer & back to new again! Almost 40 year old & the best toilet IMO.

I use the Dudley turbo flush with their own bomb, never have any problems, but was told by them that after fitting the dome washer and refitting the cistern, remove again and then to cut off the excess plastic tube.
