This one grinds my corn.

As referred to in another thread, we signed a lease on some buildings last week.

For the privilege of signing that lease, we have to pay HMRC a tax - Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT)

The amount of SDLT depends on the value of the lease.

Now, commercial leases sometimes include vat, and sometimes don't. It's "elective" - and it normally doesn't make any difference to us. Landlord charges us VAT on the rent, we pay it, and claim it back on our return. This landlord does charge VAT.

However, the value of the lease for SDLT purposes INCLUDES the value of the VAT, so if the landlord elects to charge VAT, then HMRC charge 20% more SDLT!

Then they charge a filing fee for paying the SDLT. I can't just send them a cheque - I have to give them the money AND pay their admin expenses for receiving it.

But it hasn't finished yet. I can either go to the land registry for this, or I can use their handy online Portal.

However, if I use the latter, then there is an ADDITIONAL charge for using it. Onto which... wait for it... they add FECKING VAT.

You couldn't make it up!

Just as well our government put it all to good use.... Just think of all those children in eastern Europe who would be so hard done by if it weren't the way it is, while their parents claim child benefit living in the UK.

Rays being charged vat as this unit is to house his collection of bed linen and mistresses. A fresh set is delivered every day. That's why he's paying vat!

A fresh set of mistresses? I know merchants are renowned for their shafting abilities but he's not wearing them out THAT quickly is he?
