I have a TRV that has started to vibrate and cause a noise just as the room temperature reaches the setting. When I turn the thermostat, either off or on noise stops. When I turn the thermostat from 5 down, when it reaches room temperature there is a loud clunk and vibration until it is turned completely off. There is no noise, when turning from 0 to 5. If the CH is off, or I completely close the exit valve the operation is smooth with no noise at all, so it only occurs when there is water flow through the valve. Checked for an air lock using bleed valve and it is OK. Whole radiator is hot when water flowing.

Funnily a similar problem started about a couple of week ago at my parent's house and I have been looking for a solution.

Then a week ago mine started doing the same.

Grateful for any advice you can give.

I'd go with a faulty valve - its easy to replace the whole thing. The pin on the valve may be sticking and not letting the water through properly. Just change the valve and should sort the problem

The water is flowing through it the wrong way. Swap it around. Many reversible ones don't actually do what it says on the tin.

I do think its likely that something in the valve is beginning to fail, however pin is not sticking. Flow is still controlled by sensor. If I take sensor off, I can push the pin in and out and it stops and releases the flow. If CH is running, pushing the pin in gently causes the clunk, vibration and noise. Pushing in fully in one go, there is a clunk and valve shuts of.

So sensor is working, valve is working it is just the bit between open and close that causes the clunk, vibration and noise when CH is running.

If it is the older danfoss ones it should be on the flow with the head sitting to the side If it is fitted the correct way around you will need a new valve. Cost around a tenner.

Leave the head off in the meantime

Not sure how old it is but it is a one way with an arrow on the body and the sensor out to the side.

Must be something inside that is the problem.

Looks like it is a new valve required.

im with tamz on this one, its a reversible one way type valve, if the flow is going through the wrong way they start to make a machine gun type noise/ vibration sound. take the head off and turn the flow direction arrow the other way and see what happens.

Its definitely not a reversible valve. It is the same as all the other ones in the system and fitted the same way and worked OK since I bought this house in 2009.
The flow arrow is part of the body casting and cannot be changed.
Its only started this recently.

Same same at my parent's hosuse.

If you have other similar valves, try swapping heads round. If the noise moves,it's the head, otherwise the valve.Either case, probably a new valve required. Why mess about trying to cure it?
