Just been to do a job for a woman, on the phone she said "Theres a valve thingy near the tank thingy and it's all eroded" I said I could come today and have a look as I hadn't a clue what a thingy is! A 18 mile trip across Sheffield and it turns out it was actually a dickydoo and not a thingy! Ballcock in DHW feed tank scaled up I mean

Anyhoo, I had one on the van, old one off, new one on, took me about half an hour, so she asked me how much. Told her £50 and she looked at me as if I'd just asked her for a blowie!! "That sounds expensive!" she said. I told her I charge £40 for the first hour plus materials then £20 an hour after 1st hour. She reluctantly paid up but all the way home I'm thinking to myself "Was it too much?" It's what I've always charged and I know a lot of other lads charge a lot more per hour.

Am I losing my marbles as I think that's a fair price?!

Bargain!
Bet you'll go to the next job & they'll say ' is that all, thought it would be a lot more!'
Charge the rate your happy at.

There's just no pleasing some folk is there?? Very reasonable price 'leelister6' ... Like you I'll do nothing for less than £40 and I hear guy's charging way more than that! I think you just came across a miser!! Any new customer phones me I'm up front with pricing B4 I go so they know what to expect and I can sound out their response before I consider the journey! 😀

I agree, very reasonable and about what i would have charged except plus vat. Customers see you on the job for just over 1/2hr but think you arrive at the job via the tardis !!!!!!!! Got to allow min 2hrs with travelling / congestion nowadays to these small jobs.

£50 is not enough, although you were there half an hour and the part cost £5ish, £5ish in fuel, plus the drive there and the drive home (36 mile round trip), plus it is the same day service...

How much would a cab charge to take you 36 miles.......

She's is on a result....

I would have been around that mark.
Hate it when people think you're ripping them off, hate it even more when they say "Oh, I thought it would have been a lot more than that" or when they tell you after the jobs done that the other price they got for the work was £500 more than mine. But I'm always happy with my prices, pays my bills fuels the beer belly and lets me do what I want to do. 🙂 🙂 🙂

you should of asked her to find out how much it would cost her to pass all your qualifications, buy a van, insure it, buy some tools, put in petrol, and then complete the job and then if she still thinks its "abit expensive" PUNCH HER IN THE FACE!!

hahahaha ****ing amazing thats just what i was thinking

I seem to remember Mr TP going to some simple little job for a woman who had just moved into her house.
When he got there she couldn't work out how to use the microwave so he spent 5 minutes programming the clock and explaining it to her.
Then on the the actual plumbing problem, sorry i can't remember what it was but i am sure he quoted her £40 and she just said it was too expensive! Didn't even offer a couple of £ for sorting out the microwave!

How can £40 be too expensive to sort out any problem if you need to get someone in to sort it out?

'Not nearly as expensive as a flooded house'......would have been my answer.....Nothing worse than a tight ungrateful custard  Don't dwell on it, we all get em now and again, Personally I think she got a bargain...

Too right. You done a fair job, a fair price. I agree with all previous posts. Always better to quote before though. The job is always more trivial to a client once it's done. Some people haven't got a clue. So if you charged her £100 then she might have been happier, cz she wouldn't have been any less reluctant than paying the £50. Another fellow could have invented all sorts and charged a small fortune.

bet they dont question the checkout person at there supermarket when they spend £100 on a weeks food, or try and pressure a discount off the manager at there local mcdonalds for a burger, many people just assume tradesmen try and rip everyone off.

I would have give her a bill for £45 for fixing the microwave 🙂

totally fair price fella. people forget about the usual things like the cost of diesel, insurance, parts, biscuits, burgers and lager.

Some customers will always say it's too expensive no matter what the price is

i had it the other day for a cooker to be fitted i said £60 he said he paid £20 last time the thing is the flexi if it aint got one or its damaged is £20 then the fittings for the baynet said he was gunner ring round for prices how can anyone do it cheaper unless when they get there they put the price up i would have made £40 at a push plus the local shops charge from £70 FROM being the word

I took me Grandad for a new gas cooker the other day and Currys were charging £80 to fit as long as the bayonet was accessible and we bought a hose with the cooker. I might see what they pay the fitters, and get a job with them!!

I fit cookers and hobs for a few kitchen installers who work for a certain swedish firm. Their prices are £90 for a hob and £120 for a range cooker. I don't set the prices but I happily accept payment!

in reality hobs should be dearer cos there rigid and have iso and are a pain to do,cookers is just plug in and drop test

Love it, everyone want things doing for nothing, they think you should be charging them a fiver for little 5 min jobs but forget about all your oveheads i think your price was more that fair! you charged her hourly rate as specified and made a little bit on top for parts. You should have charged her extra for her cheek! lol
