Turn one tap on, the other tap almost no water comes out...

View the thread, titled "Turn one tap on, the other tap almost no water comes out..." which is posted in Showers and Wetrooms Advice on UK Plumbers Forums.

Hello,
A novice question I'm sure.

What's the issue here? some sort of pressure issues of course but was it due to bad plumbing. What's needed in a house to ensure not matter how many taps are on the water still comes out full blast?

On top of this a similar issue is turn on tap on down stairs the kitchen sink for instance and then who ever is in the shower gets angry because they were showering in ice cold water. Why didn't the plumbers that installed the piping put some kind of device in to ensure this doesn't' happen? Why does it happen? Is it another pressure problem? Can it be retrofitted? I thought the boiler took care of pump and pressure and all these type of things.

Are there any standards when fitting plumbing to ensure engineers check all these things before leaving the property?

Thank you to all that reply.

How old is the house / plumbing?

Have you just moved in or if not has this issue just started or has it never been O.K?

Is both the Hot and Cold water on mains water i.e no cold water tank?
If both Hot and cold on mains is the hot through a combi boiler or Unvented cylinder?

If all mains, it could be low pressure from the street main, main house stopcock partly turned off, another valve somewhere partly off.
If unvented it could be the pressure regulating valve faulty or set too low or filter (if it has one) blocked.

And quite a few other causes depending on the layout.

Yes, all new systems and alterations should be checked for adequate flow at the time of install.
