It does not matter what it costs. Even a trivial injury like a sprained wrist could cost you a weeks money. A weeks money is a decent drill and set of cores. I would sell the replacement and put that away to pay for the hire of a proper core drill if needed for a job. That way you won't be tempted to use it.

Up until a few month back undoubtedly the best core drill for your money was the DDM2 at just under £300 but they have stopped selling it. I have a DDM2 and a 3. Both similar guns but the 3 is faster and £150 more expensive. I don't fancy the DDM1 at all.
Over the years i've had 2 Makita's 1 Dewalt 2 Ryobi Industrial's and a Hilti, none of them particularly cheap. They were all junk except the Hilti and are long since binned. At the end of the day if you just drill the odd hole every now and again your std sds will do the job. If you are coring every day the day a decent drill will pay for itself in time saved within 2 weeks.

Btw screw fix wouldn't be a place of choice for power tools. Search around on the net for something to suit your budget. There are lots of vgood online tool shops selling better gear.

I wouldn't have a clue where to start looking.

Did you have a go of it then?
if that was at me i haven't got my hands on one yet. i'll think about it more when i'm home. i saw here with my sds trying to core through engineering block rather tempted to give up and order one for next day delivery !!!!

Are there any diamond drilling contractors near you?
If there is stop in one day you are passing and have a chat about hand held machines.
If you look at their gear they are all similar designs to the marchrist drill.
Type hand held diamond drilling rig into google and look on the images page. Most of the machines used professionally are similar design and they certainly don't use dewalts or makitas.
