Hi all

I have been to look at a job this morning which is to install a kitchen unit and sink into a barn on a farm being used as an office. There is currently a 1/2inch black alkathene pipe buried in concrete that runs from the water main (which is in another barn about 60m away) to the barn in question. its not currently connected at either end. My question is; can i reuse this pipe to run mains water into my new sink area?

The other option is to run new MDPE pipe. Can this be run above ground? And does it have to be insulated?

Many thanks
😕

I would check the general condition of the line, and also check pressure and flow.
If you run a new line it needs to be between 750mm-1350mm below ground level.

Just to mention that the run of pipework would be inside another barn. Can Mains be run surface mounted internally? If run in MDPE does it have to be insulated?

Pressure test the line in the normal way using a test pump. If it is OK then use it.

Yes if its a new line it needs to be buried and well insulated as previous poster says.

Remember to use the correct connectors for black alkathene (I use the new Philmac universal connectors).
