M
Mrs Tara Plumbi
I just wanted get this off my chest.
Today I talked to an engineer who was named and shamed in all the usual places - story implied he almost killed people.
But there were things in the press release that didn't add up - from what I know it can't possibly have been all correct. But the general public would not notice the holes in the story.
The engineer didn't say this but listening to his story it sounds like he was set up by customers who were just after insurance claim to redecorate their house and any legal compensation they could get.
I do intend to contact the customers too, in my "I am writing a book about gas safety" guise - so I must TRY to keep an open mind.
Very hard when I could see the impact on this man's life which goes far beyond the fine. It takes 2 years to come to court. Then the articles in his local newspaper. He was NOT struck off GSR and all his previous work was checked and found to be good.
I have come across this before - at least one case of arson where they tried to stitch up a gas engineer - just for the insurance money.
These people don't realise the massive impact something like this has.
This guy did make a mistake so he was guilty - but not a life threatening major mistake (who am I to judge).... it is difficult ... but most people make mistakes sometimes and
The moral of the stories is be very wary of customers, especially those who ask you to brake the rules - such as "don't fit a vent because I will only block it up straightaway".
