Last week in the ice and snow I decided to start the engine before I de iced the screen. A I got back out I knocked the wipers on and there was a bit of a graunching noise. I swiftly killed the engine, de iced the screen and carried on my way. The wipers were a bit noisy but I ignored it because I was busy. That was a big mistake because on Friday the wipers jammed and the motor stopped turning. I pulled the fuse to save the motor and rang my man, Steve, to leave a couple of spindle gear boxes out for me.

Went over and picked them up Saturday and preceded to strip the dash apart. When I got the dash apart I realised that I had forgotten to specify the year and he had given me the later more common ones. It was too late to do anything about it then so I decided to leave it until today rectify. Steve wasn't open this morning so I nipped into another place and picked up a couple of the correct ones. Unfortunately they were Britpart ones and I'm not a huge Britpart fan but what can they do wrong with a wiper spindle gear box?

Put the new boxes on and tested it without the wipers on and I'd managed to kill the gear box on the wiper motor as well. I robbed the motor from the 110 and fitted that. All seemed okay until I fitted the wiper arm. The spindles in the Britpart rubbish were so so slack that the gears were jumping off the drive cable. That was it, a quick phone call and I was over to pick up some Bearmach ones. Those worked a treat and the dash of the beast is now back together with only a few screws left over.

In future I'll free the wipers before I start the engine. Mind you it should be a bit stronger now with new boxes. On the plus side the parts only cost me £36.

The thing is you wouldn't have been out starting your Volkswagen trainspotter because there was 6" of snow and drifts 3' deep.

That's a horrible moment when you do that. Hate to think what that would cost on something else.

glad you posted that..

run through for me how to strip the dash because i have a n/s heater pipe leaking into dash..

just the sequence will do, i will handle the rest.lol
ta muchy

oh yes, the vw would cost you £338 and a day in garage lol.

You just keep undoing screws and it all comes apart. Everything apart from the plastic trim is screwed in place. The grab handle at the left also has two studs that stick down into the section below so this has to be wiggled out. The worst bit is remembering which screw goes back where and I've got no idea where the two screws I've got left over have come from.
