Hi guys,

In a nod back to my previous life as an office bod, I am working with a company looking at bringing a new product to the UK market. They have been trading for 3 years or so in France.

Basically, the kits they sell are made on the one hand of off-the-shelf components (made by companies like Roca, SAS, Geberit and Fluidmaster), with a special resin basin which they manufacture themselves. I haven't yet checked, but I'm darn confident that those components from external suppliers will be compliant/approved.

My question is this:
- is the basin likely to require WRAS approval as well? Is a basin even considered a fitting?
- is the whole kit then subject to approval?

More generically, the first paragraph on New Page 2 states that "When installing a product which will carry or receive water from the public mains water supply in the UK, it is a criminal offence if it does not comply with the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations or Scottish Byelaws." Yet, though I've only been a plumber a short while (as you know from the stupid questions I post) I haven't really seen many existing installations which correspond to what I was tought is "the correct way".

The company and I want to do things right, but there's no way they'll want to spend a fortune and a half going through an approval process which may not in the end be indispensable...

What are your thoughts?

Imho I don't think it is a problem, wras is about supply and distribution of water not sanitary fittings on the waste side. Unless there is a supply fitting on the basin integral.

If you/they are selling it as a lump then I guess you would have to ensure that it all complied (air / tap gaps etc)
If you are not sure ask them they are very good like that, if you email they normally get back to me within a couple of hours. (use the one on the WRAS web site)

P.S. in this country it is the person who uses the water who will get prosecuted for breaking the Regs (their defence in Law, if things do go wrong is that they used an approved plumber & they can prove it cos they have a commissioning cert from them)

Thanks to you both. I'll follow it up directly with them (we were hesitant... it felt a bit like asking the taxman "do I owe you more money?" I mean... what are the chances he'll say "no".)

WE are doing a wras app at present - if you want to learn more - reply and i will help you
