Depends what type. Some are very caustic (alkalis), which are for clearing grease, fat and hair. Others are very acidic (sulphuric acid) and are better at dealing with mineral deposits, rust, etc.

Whichever you use, it is essential that you read and understand the manufacturer's safety and usage instructions.
 
And if using them fails and you resort to a professional drain cleaner company, tell them you have used chemicals before they start,, they'd normally ask.
