Hi all. Recent bought a house which i am in the middle of fixing up. The downstairs toilet has a weird pipe coming from under the floor and i am not sure what its for.

Ideally id like to get rid of it but looking for advice.

Is it for cleaning out the waste for the toilet in case of a blockage? Thats the only thing i can think of?

If so can i reduce the height of it by cutting it in half?

Thanjs in advance.

It is a "Durgo" otherwise known as an automatic air admittance valve it allows air into the drainage system not not the smells out.
Plumber would need to see how it was connected to the drainage system & what fittings it was serving to be able to tell you if it could be safely moved or even removed.

Sorry can-not move it of make it lower , it has to be above highest water level, (Durgo valve) or air admittance valve for drains.

McAlpine definitely makes an Air Admittance valve that is approved to be installed below the spill over level if that is of any help. I've not installed one like that myself but found out about that when I found one under a bath and investigated its suitability. Turns out that it was acceptable.

Thanks for the replies, so ive been reading on this AAVs and Ive seen a few forums posts about HepVO trap on the waste pipe for the sink. As the downstairs toilet will only have a toilet and sink would it be possible to remove the AAV completely if I added a HepVO trap to the sink? or would I need both? Ive read a couple of contradicting posts on the internet.

Also Stigster, I don't suppose you happen to have a link or product name/no for the Durgo you were referring to?

Thanks in advance.
