One of the lads at my work is in a spot of bother and that's possibly the understatement of the month to be honest, so far he has been suspended for 15 days whilst an internal investigation takes place. That was before gas safe and hwe got involved. Sad to say it dosent look good for him.

Im not sure exactly what happened as I was away for a few weeks but I'd suggest it has something to do with the following scenarios. We've been emailed and asked to respond with our course of actions we would each take. I've emailed my responses back but interesting to see what you'd all respond. So what you guys saying.

Scenario 1 ) The boiler is a floor mounted open flue ,which after analysing the flue gas, is discovered to be producing excessive CO.
You are called by the office to attend another job where water is pouring through the ceiling which is urgent & you have to attend
Can you please list the task’s that you would complete before you leave the property to attend the other call.

Scenario 2 ) You are asked to re attend the job the next day ,knowing that there is a problem with CO .You pick up the keys from the estate agent to the empty property, you are working alone.
Can you please list the task’s you would complete when attending a boiler with a CO problem working alone.

Scenario 3) You are servicing a boiler everything is all OK ,but the fan assisted boiler flue disappears into a duct & cannot be traced through out its length ,what do you do next.

1 turn off/cap / refuse other job until first job is complete

2 wear a co alarm and open windows if you can/vent the property

3 find flue (start taking duct lids off) if you cant turn off/cap

1. Make safe until can re-attend. ie cut & cap!
2. Carry out an ambient CO test with suspect appliance to establish any issue then fully check/repair appliance.
3. Leave boiler AR until flue route access made.

1 - cut & cap/label. Then do other job

2 wearing the appropriate ppe an d using the company supplied calibrated test equipment test appliance and room it's in

3 - fga boiler, note readings, if unable to find flue take photos and ar boiler until hatchs fitted

why would you be using a flue gas analyser on an open flued boiler even BG dont ask for that and it wouldnt be in the service instructions for that type of boiler
Was there evidence of spillage
with no spillage burner pressure and gas rate correct flue test passed job done
off to do the other 10 services they want you to do before 5

1) I don't tend to carry out flue analysis of open glued appliances. Carry out burner pressure, gas rate, flue flow and spillage check ventilation, flueing and flame picture. And if it is a service then strip down and clean. Only time I would carry out analysis is if I suspected something wrong to confirm or if it contains asbestos.

If I then noticed it had high co but passed all other checks then I would address the issue with the customer and ask to isolate label and fill out warning notice, if it failed something else then ID and cap if customer allows or contact esp and note down reference number.

2) I would carry out a strip down service then pretty much do what I said in 1.

3) I would use my judgement and find where the flue exits the building and check all possible routes for signs of distress. Check air inlet with analyser if possible. AR boiler and note down that you are unsure of route of flue and have inspected say lounge, dining and kitchen ceiling etc. I feel this would show that you have made all attempts to cover yourself.
