Got called off a roof today by a "passing" hse inspector while helping a mate out on his solar pv instal.
We had a scaffold tower, handrails, harnesses, flourescent vests, hard hats, risk assessement p/w but unfortunately we didn't have a copy of our "method statement" so he's coming back tomorrow to inspect it.

Can anyone tell me where to get one of these or where I can read an example of one ?

thanks

there all over the net.
its a step by step how to do the job.
tell him to get one... as its not your job.lol.

Jobsworth!
Was he involved with the job in any way?

You had proper safety equipment in place and he is wanting a bit of paper that states what you are already doing.

I would give give a method statement for sticking my toe up his behind.

No he was just "passing"
Certainly felt like sticking my tow up his behind - lol

1. Find one in Welsh.
2. Use PPE footwear so you ensure you insert the toe fully.

Haven't these people anything better to do?

If you are stuck show him the installer manual, method statements are a load of B.S. just another way of adding paperwork to the job.

nothing to do with the job , springs to mind a 4 letter word starting with a c ending in a t and un in the middle

I've only had to do a couple of MS's in the past and before the days of everything being on the net.
Absolute nightmare and a waste of time, especially when combined with a Risk Assessment. 🙁

If you have a health and safety statement your method statement should be covered in that, if you don't have one say nothing.

I agree with mountainman they are a nightmare especially on public works, we hit trouble when fixing rads in a small extension to a hospital, standard fixings were not biting so we changed to an expanding bolt, they held up the money for over a year because we had moved away from the original method statement without authorisation.

If he persists tell him you will have it next week, job should be finished by then.

Sometimes a fifty pound note covers all paperwork required.

personally id tell him to fudge himself, you should have said this is my house get off my land and keep your opinions to yourself you jobsworth mother lover.

He could go onto any building site and find enough problems to shut it down easy, why he needs to stop and pick you......... id be tempted to punch him for being a *&^%$$^&U*

Get a brown paper bag and leave it in the van! When he turns up lead him to the van pick up the bag saying its just in here mate, then proceed to punch him through the bag right on his nose! Walk away saying that's your method statement!

Unsubtle but effective 🙂

If your mate is MCS registered , surely he is doing this/these all the time?

If he is not MCS is it worth installing PV ??

Unfortunately the HSE have loads of power, prob more than the police.

Pain in the arse tho. I have seen some shocking PV installs in progress, near hurricane wind and rain and still these firms send their guys up on roofs fitting panels :59:.

Im sure it wont be long before there is a fatality, and we will probably see even more legislation/ rules.

Kev.

I got done for 400 quid a years back when putting the lead on a flat bay window (8ft up). Well i actually got done for sitting up there having a *** because that is what i was doing when he caught me! Same shyt, he was just passing and it happened to be just off a main road. I saw him get out the car and put the hard hat and yellow jacket on and thought "wonder what this cant wants" Then he pulled the camera out. I failed to see how making me £400 lighter saved my life but there you go.

Method statements are something I normally only do for commercial work or ISO900 companies. The company project managers want them to see if there are any issues (eg working at height whilst other contractors are below, hot work, running off water, heating downtime etc)

That was usually when we were asked for them, usual practice was to have a site meeting with all contractors present the purpose of the method statement was to show how you would not be in the way of the other trades and they also knew what space you needed, safety and co-operation being put into practice.

Once had an azzwhipe council architect refusing to allow me to start a job because our health and safety statement did not include reference to some 1960's factory at work act, the ladder was standing against the side of the building so I referred him to the section "Safe use of ladders" and asked him how were we to secure the ladder for safe working, securing it at the top was the answer, I then asked him how was I to safely secure the ladder because there was no way to secure it without climbing it unsecured.

He walked away and work progressed, problem is these paper pushers don't have to explain anything and have all the power to make life very awkward for us.

Tamz,

I wouldn't have paid the fine unless I was being a really bold boy.

ive done it before, where when one of the goons have come on site with a hard hat and high viz but no steel toe caps, send him away if he doesnt meet the PPE criteria - gets their back up but all good fun.
