Where do I put DHW cylinder?

Morning all,

we're building a new house which plumbing wise can be split into 2

left side 2 bathrooms, down to kitchen, down to shower room in basement.

right side 2 bathrooms down to guest bathroom, wc and utility room.

6 people in the house, so plan was to have 2 mega flows, 1 per side so that we had constant HW and shorter pipe runs

question is do I install them in the basement close to the boiler or in the attics on to of the bathrooms?

thanks in advance, Jez.

A house that sort off size if possible site near boiler and should be putting in a secondary return
One good sized acv cylinder forget about megaflows there overrated and temperamental

I take it that the pressures and flows have been checked out to ensure two unvented cylinders can be used simultaneously?

Somebody would really need to see the plans to give you a good idea. Until that then I would say both options have their pro's and con's.

Beat me to it. Mega flow is an absolute waste of time and money. Bubble always going. Have you spoken to any one? If you have and they haven't said it's a bad idea get rid of them - either a yes man or a nugget.

Can you install solar as this will reduce the amount of gas you use.
SOLAR THERMAL NOT PV!

I would suggest an ACV SLME 600.

Make sure your primaries are big. 28 or 35mm and the boilers got some big balls!

The SLME will out perform any other cylinder you care to look at, it holds water at 85c and blends it with cold at outlet to 65c. So you get more useable water for the size. It doesn't have a coil the whole tank is a coil. It will work really well with solar and or Heat pump.
It will outlast any other.

Please over insulate and install wet underfloor heating. Please install radiators on individual heating zones and oversize them by upto 150% this will mean your boiler can run at a much lower temp and save you money. Also it will work well with ashp and gshp.

Great feedback, thanks. I'm in CM6 Great Dunmow.

Had a plumber lined up,but he went AWAL.

On the advise of Affinity water we had the main upgraded to 32mm and then ran a 50mm pipe from the boundy to the house, which is 60m. We were told the mains has 4 bar, 32mm stays within domestic pricing and the large run of 50mm would give us a great flow rate.

Looked at GSHP/ASHP, but couldn't get the figures to add up as HMG won't set tarrifs.

All floor are wet UFH, loads of insulation, SIPS house. would love advise from "none nugget"

cheers' Jez.

New build:
1) Insulate
2) Insulate
3) Insulate
4) Go for Ufloor heating - it uses less energy as humans like the heat that way.

If your on mains gas, boiler is the way to go, if not mains gas, so long as you've done 1,2,3,4 then consider an ASHP and get paid under the RHI for 7 years to cover the additional capital cost. If you've done 1,2,3,4 it can also still be cheaper to run a WELL designed ASHP system than mains gas.

All RHI tariffs set as it went live today 🙂

Sorry I forgot to say put cyl near boiler and use a secondary circulator . (bronze pump)

1) It's a mix of silicone render and weatherboard.
2) spent 2 years waiting for tarrif s and bought oil boiler as none set!

The vote seems to be to have the cylinder close to the boiler in the basement, which raises more questions.

1) My main concern is water flow, so given the furthest bathroom is 35m away, would you run this in the same outlet as the cylinder 22mm?

2) I've got a 32mm main, on the boundary this is connected to a 50mm pipe (affinity waters advise) that runs the 100m to the house. We live in a hard water area, but water softeners only have a 1inch in/out. So to maintain water flow rate I was going to split the 50mm main into 2x25mm feeding 2 water softeners, one for hot & one for cold.

cheers,
Jez
