thought I would continue this here instead of the other thread

When I went in the Ecotec training day a few years ago I was told to open the heat exchanger up every 5 years unless FGA reading say otherwise

Every time you open the heat exchanger you should replace the seal

Am I wrong? Or has it changed?

Correct...although the graphite seals don't tend to wear much I still replace every other service for the sake of £13. I will clean hex every 2 years.

Bloke on vaillant course said to renew every year but when I went on a fault finding course a different tutor said every it's unnecessary.

Nope. I said that I change it. I said that the instructions don’t specify that you have to.

That is the damn reason why the boilers don’t last long. When I service a boiler I strip it down, clean burner, flush main heat exchanger, siphon, ****, replacing seals, electrodes ... that’s what the customer is paying for. There is no other service than that. Majority of engineers don’t service boilers properly and that’s so wrong.

Do you powerflush the heating system every year 😛

Problem is Ron most customers aren’t interested in paying proper service prices
Also it’s not going to prolong the life of the boiler as long as it IS done at regular intervals.

You wouldn’t change the cam belt on your car every year.

True, and you know why? Because there are hardly any engineers who do a proper service. They fool customers but charging the big coin. I haven’t got an issue as I make them aware of what I am doing and what the cost will be.

Unfortunately I have to disagree. The life of the boiler will be extended by doing annual proper services. Majority of boilers just last between 10-15 years a boiler should last about 25 years.
But again, everyone has a different opinion as well as different ways of services. I stick to the way which I’ve done for the last 14 years.

How can you service boilers for 14 years when you have only been qualified for 1 in the uk?

I would say most boilers fail and are replaced due to water quality, electrical gremlins and cost of parts making repair not economical. Cheap Ali heat exchangers fail but not many SS heat exchangers

You need to wind it in a little Ron as I’m sure most engineers on here would be offended by your implication that they aren’t doing a proper service. Some homeowners simply will not pay for a new seal and electrodes at every service. With some of them it’s hard enough getting them to top up inhibitor. I believe the old saying is you can’t get blood out of a stone.

What a load of shat!!!!

Where does it say in the Vaillant manual to flush main heat exchanger, replace electrodes or any seal. Electrodes last quite a while and don’t need doing on a yearly basis, renew if necessary..... usually warped. So if you do this on every service, you’re effectively charging customers for work that doesn’t need doing.... lining your pockets in a long drawn out service and making money on the parts you sell.

Matchless, you haven’t been doing this job long and probably spending to much time trying to show off in front of the customer... that you’re a gas engineer and you know what you’re doing. If you knew what you were doing, you wouldn’t do the this pathetic boiler strip down service.

Rant over...

Sorry, I just couldn’t help myself at this bit...

‘a boiler should last about 25 years’

Get yourself on a plane back to motherland and hop on the bus to ‘Vaillant HQ’ and ask them to stop using plastic parts that fail from fatigue’

Boilers nowadays are deemed a ‘white good’, they’re not built to last.

Changing electrodes every year is definitely not necessary...they will easy last 5 years give or take. As for seals. If the customer won't change the seal I simply wouldn't service the boiler. Because you ain't servicing...just saftey checking it.

I apologise if I came across rude or offended anyone on here didn’t mean to. I just meant the boilers I come across and the engineers around my area seem to luck of doing a good service but charging the big coin. I think there should be a good balance between the service and the charge. You cannot just go to a customer and spend 30min perhaps 40min for a service and charge £150-200 seems a little unfair. But I understand where you all are coming from. I also know everyone of us does a different type of service and again I do not mean anyone of you guys that you don’t do a good service.

You are a quite rude human being I can tell you that. Furthermore the silly poor ecotec pro, or fit are all made in you motherland 🙂 such a poor quality of boilers we don’t produce mate.

But thanks for your input.

I’m out!!!

I guess you should tell the other bloke to wind it as it seems a little rude though!

😛.....really?

You make a broad statement saying the majority of gas engineers don’t service properly... such a self righteous comment.

And you’re always banging on about how you do such a superior service, stripping boiler to nothing but a casing, probably completely disregarding the manufacturers instructions and costing the customer unnecessary elevated bills to just satisfy your need to feel all important and qualified. It’s got absolutely nothing to do with doing a good service, you treat a service as a cash cow and I can quite believe you charge £200 or more for a couple of hours of your time.

And on a final note, you can collect all the ecotec pro and plus and anything other shat that Vaillant make and stick em on a big train, back over to your motherland.

Ron can you not see why people have reacted to what you said?? Perhaps a little rude but so is telling competent engineers that they aren’t servicing correctly just because they don’t do it like you.
And to be fair there is some truth in the whole not servicing in line with MIs electrodes do not need to be done annually
This is not going to become a bickering session so I suggest the toys go back In the pram on all sides

Haha, you are one of those people who voted brexit, you are just a simple racist ...!!! Do t need to comment more ...

Whatever they are saying I don’t give a damn ... I know what has to be done and how to do my job. I never judged about the people on here and that’s a fact. If they get touched by it, than there must be some sort of truth in it. I also never said you have to service a boiler like I do.

wow that’s a bold statement my friend. That’s the kind of small minded left wing bollox that puts the country in the state it’s in. I couldn’t care less where you or anyone else is from as long as they do a good fair job, pay their way and abide by the law of the land. That’s the typical response as soon as things go against people to throw the racism card out there and to say that all those that vote the same way are also racist. Pathetic just pathetic

Now now children, my daughter spits her dummy out less than you guys. Stop all being power hungry and get on.

And I’ll do you a favour and close it because I’m not being insulted by petty small minded idiots like you

So because question you, we have to prove we’re not racist. I thought the ‘racist card’ had diminished..

Guess not.

We must’ve time warped to the 70’s

So far until that comment before being provoked by someone I wasn’t rude. The only person that’s provoked anyone was you

Ron, we are going in circles with this. Your comment, YOUR comment!!! ruffled a lot of people. You are not the god of boiler services, you don’t get to dictate to people on here who is doing it right and wrong. You have to be man enough to stand by the following fallout because of what you said. You cannot toss around the racism card because people criticise a boiler which lets be fair originated in Germany. We’d have the same digs at Italy for ferolli and Biasi. What you fail to see or don’t want to see is that you are wrong with that very early sweeping statement saying most of us don’t service properly

@Riley, where did I mentioned that the engineers on here don’t service properly? I said in general not particular the engineers on here did I?
However, if you say I’m wrong that’s fine with me don’t bother me at all, I will keep it going the way it should be.

I realise English is not your first language Ron but you have to be mindful of people reading your messages. Text speak which is what this essentially is, can be construed in many ways depending on who reads it. And you can see from the reaction how many people got upset by it.

Just been on a Vaillant course. They say that the seal only needs changing if you inspect inside the burner chamber which should be done every 5 years as a minimum. He said that you can change annually if you wish, but there is no need.
