He should have turned gas off and contacted a gas safe engineer simple as that really, its not rocket science, we are talking GAS you can even freephone 0800 111 999 come on dont encourage non gas safe registerd people to carry out repairs your making a mockery out of been registerd and encouraging potential deaths or fatal injuries, we need to act in a professional manner.

no doubt about it whatever way you look at it the OP was wrong in doing the work on his own, it is illegal and it is not us that decide if its right or not its the HSE

Hold on a minute it all started because the man fixed his sisters LEAKING GAS FITTING then he got a gassafe engineer to check it I think that does show he was competent I don't think he did anything wrong and I don't think regs will show he did anything wrong who was to say it was not agassafe engineer left the fitting leaking??
We all have our own opinion on this matter
That's my opinion might be right might be wrong but it's mine and I stand by it

if you read the regs that govern our work i think you will find where he went wrong, you will see that gas work needs to be tested immediately, not left till a later date, so that is one point you are wrong on, it must be done by a competant person, the OP isnt competant by his own admission as he got it checked "just to be sure" so that is a second point you are wrong on, if he phoned me to fix his sisters gas leak i would not have phoned anyone to check it as i am fully qualified and completely competant to do so, so by definition he is admitting he isnt fully confident in his fix as he got someone to check it, you are gas qualified, who do you get to check your work or are you like me and have paid to prove you are competant and qualified by doing ACS, so we dont need anyone to check our work, the OP spotted a problem fair play but he should have got the qualified guy in to sort it and be completely happy, it doesnt say whether he fixed the leak then took her to work , or isolated the gas and did it later or (unlikely) he fixed it after work, but whatever the scenario he did work, then at a later date got it checked, this is wrong and dangerous, back to you and i, most of the time we fit pipes with no problem, as we check immediately so i think i am more than capable of fitting and sealing gas pipes, but would i be arrogent enough to not test them till later "cause im good and i know what im doing" no i test my work immediately to be sure and because i know i must, the OP got the work tested later which is wrong however you look at it. and thats my opinion
there is nothing wrong with having an opinion that is found to be wrong and changing it (to mine haha)

Kirk I will take your point as you teach the stuff but I I still think the guy did his sister a favour
I will not change my mind on that
Someone fitted that fitting that was cracked and did not spot it the guy did
I think he did a good turn

Hi can i please ask your opinion on this please, has from what i take it you do gas training, i had a inspection last year, first one for quite somtime thought all was going well, until he checked the gas meter cabinet, he looked inside and i could see a glint in his eyes "he said right whats wrong in here then?" I looked and better looked, i could not find a problem, and told him i thought everything looked and checked out fine, "Where is the number for gas emergency?" He then went to his pocket for a pen to give me, so i could write the number down on the meter, to say i was annoyed is a understatment i refused point blank to write it down stating it is gas transporters responsability to have the number and not me, told him i dont mind him inspecting my work and if its wrong will take advice and put it right, but i was not having that, do you think i was wrong? He seemed to back track when i refused and tried to make a joke of it, in my opinion its the gas transporters job to provide the number, was i wrong?

it is the gas transporter or supplier's responsibility to supply the emergency number but it is YOUR job to spot it is missing, same as problems with the ECV, certainly not your job to fix prob for free, but you need to advise responsible person of the NCS, used to be in charge of 35 guys doing social housing gas and we agreed with the clients that we would fit labels on meters and on/off tape where required FOC, (they supplied a works order to supply a role of tape and labels when required for each guy) and rather than the guy take time to write no label or on/off tape on their job ticket they fitted it, but that was an agreement between me and the landlords, as long as they supplied tape and labels it was all part of the service and the turnover was £1.35 million per year so it wasnt a prob for me to get the guys to do it when they were in the house

Should i have wrote it on then? If he had explained the way you have in your previous post i would have been fine, because you have taught me somthing and will look out for it in the future, but it was the guys arrogance and glint as if to say "i have got you attitude", thankyou for explaining it to me and will make sure i check this in the future, i always try and make sure i do things right and am the first to put my hand up if i have done it wrong or make a mistake, i just thought he was wrong in the way he handled it.

the answer to your question is NO, you dont HAVE to write it on, but you do HAVE to advise the responsible person of the NCS (verbally) although sometimes it is easier to fix something than report it, in this case given his attitude if you had noticed the label missing and had offered to write it on, he would have said you have written it the wrong size or the wrong font, was it just the phone number that was missing? usually that is on a label with other info so you would have been wrong anyway to just write the number on, there are always at least 2 ways to tell/advise someone of something that isnt right, and sometimes that is the skill,

So if he had of tested his work immediately & was confident not to feel the need to get it checked 'just to be sure' because he was confident with his work, does this make him competant & the work he carried out was 'legally' done?

i was commenting on errors that i felt gray0689 was making about what the OP had done, re-read what i wrote, whether someone is competent or not needs to be decided in court, the OP himself felt the work wasnt guaranteed as he got it checked,

I was asking hypathetical(sp), that if the OP hadn't felt the need to get his work checked, & if he has done his work to the book, ie; Testing as soon as work was completed...wether he was still carrying out illegal work! As for competence, as you say a court would decide this if he ended up there!

My apologies to those who may have been offended by my post I merely wished to draw my unusual finding (porous fitting no crack) to the attention of the forum. Thank you to those who responded to the post finding it of interest, and the additional advice as to the legality of the help I freely gave to my sister. The cooker was examined and given the ok by my gas safe friend who considered a competent job had been achieved without need for redress. Keep up the good work folks. Hope they bring back those orange Kit Kats... perhaps they will for April Fools day.

this is something that we have argued about for yrs and will only be resolved when someone goes to court, however the chances of anyone going to court BEFORE an incident happens is nil, it is hard enough to get someone to court who has done something wrong, as i see it gas work isnt rocket science or brain surgery, so if someone learns how to do a task by reading books and talking to a gas engineer, uses all the right material, tests properly using all test equipment, has "relevant" experience etc i dont see how a court can convict them of not being competent, but as i said this will be the ultimate test case but wont happen to someone who does work which doesnt cause a problem, when there is an incident then surely the person in court will be convicted of not being competent as they have caused a problem, whether they have gas quals or not,
