Conversion of the national gas network to hydrogen?

It is terrible in Leeds at the moment getting around, nearly every street has road works going on as major gas line upgrades are taking place fitting miles & miles of new pipeline. As I understand it they will test your gas appliances to check they are safe before they turn the gas back on. If your appliance has a fault, it won't be safe to turn your gas back on and they won't be able to reconnect the supply until the appliance has been checked by a Gas Safe engineer. As their engineers are not qualified to repair appliances and will advise you to contact Gas Safe to find a local engineer. Things could get extremely busy round these parts when it start to come online.

Well, having read that Grauniad article (which was much more thorough than I'd had in "Installer", it looks like They're only talking a percentage of hydrogen, not the whole lot, so probably business as usual on the customer-owned side of the network and costs of grid work will be passed on to customers as is usual.

What I don't get though, is how, if it is true (is it?) that an RGI cannot legally use jointing compound with LPG, but can with natural gas, then a pipe, jointed for natural gas so potentially using compound, can then be safely used for hydrogen.

If I'm right, it really does seem a case of 'try it - what's the worst that can happen?' approach!
