is this all a gas safe registered engineer with own van and tools can achieve.

not looking for myself - but for any newcomers wanting to spend there hard earned cash on retraining into this sectror maybe this will enlighten them.

Bear in mind laborours earn 8-9 per hour on site

Someone will do it though. As long as that happens then yes there is a value. Like it or not it is Market forces

Disgraceful, i believe you can earn the best part of that figure stacking shelves in the supermarket these days.... no massive training and registration costs and you cant get jailed if you screw up, makes you wonder why we bother sometimes.

£10 p/hr is not an uncommon wage in the trade at the moment, but that would normally include van and tools supplied. Plenty of engineers out of work who may consider this wage because they have no work at all.
Like others have mentioned you may aswell stack shelves and do some cash in hand jobs on the weekend.

Plus once people have learnt a trade with skill and knowledge involved I think many would find it difficult to do unskilled work even if the pay was the same. Unskilled work may be risk free and less stressful but good god is it dull.

I was getting paid much less than this in the first 18 months of being qualified. I did have a van and all that though. It's bad when you consider all the risks we make. It's like what has been said, you could to work in the morning and have killed someone by the afternoon. The problem is though, even stepping out the door you face a risk.

I'm on 12.20 an hour at the moment working 47 hour week, so i should make about 460 after tax at the most but no doubt the leeches in the agency will take off some hidden charges....not alot of money for alot of work but ive still got my own jobs booked for weekends and evenings.

First day today though was a looong day, nothing to do as the other agency guy didnt have his IPAF so we couldnt do the work required, other guy will have his IPAF so we should be able to do the services now. General vibe of the job is that its going to be easy 😛

Personally I work less hours for more money! I'm fortunate thank God! Try to do a cupl here and a cuple there ... don't do weekends or to late in the evening either .... You know why? Coz my house is paid for next year and there is more to life..lol...! I still love doing what I do for the people i do it for 30+ yrs on ...🙂 Make the job about money and you'll soon burn out! IMHO.

All that to one side though £10/hr is a lot of money for some and they'll snap the hand off he Shylock that'll feeds them! *Sigh*

I think I can hack a couple of months at this to get the money in so i can start paying off my overheads early, then it will be less stressful when not alot of work coming in 🙂

This is more or less situation I am in at moment, for not much more than the £10 per hour.
There is not much happening out there at moment and just have to accept it for now.

where is your area of work??

I was laid off 2 months ago (working for a big national company). Up until then I would not have got out of bed for that.

Since then I have been working for myself and I must say things are tough (not the time to go it alone with no customer base).

If I cannot survive until winter when the work gets plenty, I might be force into work like this but I still think it devalues our trade.

Admire your honesty armourer ... Regardless of government stats this industry is a hard nut to crack! It takes some time to establish trust i believe! These businesses prey on that and take advantage of the skills we have and exploit them for their own gain whilst keeping their employed needy! *sigh*

Newcastle City Council were paying me 24k, basic B4 tax, 3 yrs ago, bye the way , as a gas engineer! BG I believe are now around the 30k basic! Just to give you all some perspective!

The big company now days work on volume. They get a fixed rate per call out (including parts). So on some you will loose (ie £100 per call out / fan costs £140 instant loss, without labour) but the next 3 call outs it maybe £10 stat, top up pressure and room stat, Win.

You can only survive like this with volume work and a workforce on as low an hourly rate as possible (or even productivity ie completed job or no pay).

This to my mind is whats driving down the engineers rates.
