Hoping you guys can give me an idea of what's going on here.

Got a phonecall on my way home tonight, mate tells me his hot water is lukewarm/fluctuating hot and cold, and his rads have come on. He says this has happened before and his heating comes on.

Went to look (didn't have any tools as I'd left them all on another job, so no multimeter etc) expecting to see diverter valve problem, which there is, but need clarification:

1. I checked the actuator was moving, it seemed ok, although i could push the plunger back easily when activated.

2. Checked the diverter by manually pushing the pin home, again, seemed okay but couldn't tell if it was diverting fully cos the flow and return were too hot to touch.

Told my mate I need to look again with all my tools and heating cold. I then switched the boiler to summer mode, clock off, stat down and temp control fully down to make sure it couldn't fire on heating. told him to let rads cool then try hot water again.

3. Here's the confusing thing to me - he called me up after an hour and said, tried hot water, works fine and rads staying cold. Turned all heating controls back on, stat down, again, all seems fine.

So if it's a mechanical problem with the actuator/diverter, how can it be intermittent? I was thinking maybe PCB is not giving actuator head enough power, but tbh I'm hardly well versed in boiler repairs, so I could be a million miles off.

Any suggestions on what could be at fault, or what checks to carry out next time?

Also worth noting that I got a little jolt off the boiler casing, will check for electric fault when I go back.

It's the second time it has done this, and no one touched it the first time cos i couldnt get there, it just sorted itself out overnight.

does it have a black motor held in with a clip onto a brass dv?

Yes, and the black motor operated as it should, I.e. plunger popped out when HW demand, but I could easily push it back a way before I felt resistance.

can you try to find the mi,s on line i need to see what dv is in there i think i am thinking of a different type

thats the type i thought it was, shake it to your ear is there water in it? was the actuator bush damp/wet?

I'll try that next time. Didn't look wet but it had a bit of gunk/lime scale on it. You thinking water has got out of the diverter into the actuator? That would prob explain the water I found under the casing, couldn't find the source earlier.

water under the motor means the bush is shot its getting into the motor and causing your issue new motor and bush time,or refurb kit if available

Superb. Thanks gasman, at least that's an economical repair.

I'm seeing "3 way valve overhaul kit" in the M.I 's online, you reckon that's what I'm after?

Sorry to be a pain, but which part is the bush? Is it worth changing the whole diverter cartridge?

Parts list:

It's worth fitting the changeover service kit, when you're removing the gland & steel washer from the 3way valve cover you'll need a box spanner. It might be aswell to order a new 3way valve cover part 2904 as the ferrel that holds the gland into the cover often comes loose.

Will a mixer tap box spanner do the job?

Thanks for the advice!
