Hoping you guys can give me an idea of what's going on here.
Got a phonecall on my way home tonight, mate tells me his hot water is lukewarm/fluctuating hot and cold, and his rads have come on. He says this has happened before and his heating comes on.
Went to look (didn't have any tools as I'd left them all on another job, so no multimeter etc) expecting to see diverter valve problem, which there is, but need clarification:
1. I checked the actuator was moving, it seemed ok, although i could push the plunger back easily when activated.
2. Checked the diverter by manually pushing the pin home, again, seemed okay but couldn't tell if it was diverting fully cos the flow and return were too hot to touch.
Told my mate I need to look again with all my tools and heating cold. I then switched the boiler to summer mode, clock off, stat down and temp control fully down to make sure it couldn't fire on heating. told him to let rads cool then try hot water again.
3. Here's the confusing thing to me - he called me up after an hour and said, tried hot water, works fine and rads staying cold. Turned all heating controls back on, stat down, again, all seems fine.
So if it's a mechanical problem with the actuator/diverter, how can it be intermittent? I was thinking maybe PCB is not giving actuator head enough power, but tbh I'm hardly well versed in boiler repairs, so I could be a million miles off.
Any suggestions on what could be at fault, or what checks to carry out next time?
Also worth noting that I got a little jolt off the boiler casing, will check for electric fault when I go back.
