W Plan still used?

View the thread, titled "W Plan still used?" which is posted in UK Plumbers Forums on UK Plumbers Forums.

Hi All,

I am involved in upgrading the heating system controls in a block of flats, where they have one communal boiler, but what is confusing me, is we are replacing the controls to each flat with W plan (ho****er priority) systems.
Even though the flats have old Y plan midpostion valves in?!

I just cant think why they are doing this? I did mention my concerns but cant get my head around this?!

Any ideas?

Thanks

Chris

They might be being used as diverter valves to either send it through the flat when energised or back in to the primary circuit rtn when de-energised perhaps? That would need other controls for hw tho

I thi k you are better of ask your contractor as we would not know ! I personally will replace with min y plan but if its new cylinder and boiler would have done S as per part L

W plan does have it's place nowadays, viesmann (built in diverter) and remeha use it with their weather comp systems, to ensure correct flow temps delivered to cyl/heating circuits.

Roger is right these will make a come back as more & more W Comp systems start to be installed. With these systems you can not have hot water & heating on at the same time it is either hot water production when the boiler flow temp goes up to around 75-80 deg C or Heating when the heating flow temp goes up & down depending on the outside air temp, so it is either or not both but main reason for using is when system shuts down there is always an open circuit incase of pump overrun for the boiler to dispel heat in boiler.
I would have used one if I could have got to my 2 x 2 ports & pipework.
