well technically he hasnt his employer has for sending him to that job in the first place alone/in the first place

and jay

you done any work on gas appliance before unsupervised eg alone????

NO, not on my own.. other than topping up system pressure

the only time as a trainee you can work/touch/disable a gas appliance is with a gsr tech with you

Well I consider myself better informed now so I will stand by what I said and refuse any jobs where I have to open up a boiler.

no totally true as long as the gas pipe isnt connected strip away/ripping out old boiler 😉

lol the gas pipe will always be connected on a breakdown.. I'll call the boss in the morning and tell him to send a gsr engineer to doube check the boiler

In all fairness, it wasn't the boss who sent me to the job. The office girls just book jobs to whoever is willing to do them, I didn't know until I got there that I was going to open up the boiler. So I hold my hands up and admit fault.. I consider myself well and truly warned!!!!

Cheers lads.. Much appreciated!

borrowed from robert tyrrells post..

Below is an extract from the GSIUR:

Gas work should only be undertaken:
(a) by a person who has successfully completed an industry-recognised training course followed by assessment of competence. Training that leads to assessment of competence in safe gas work should be recognised by the industry’s standards setting body; or
(b) in the case of a currently or previously registered person, where they have proved competence through a certification scheme; or
(c) for those working at premises that fall outside the scope of the Regulations (see regulation 2(4) and associated guidance), by a person who has successfully completed an appropriate full training course followed by assessment of competence.

The mention of competency refers to the ACS exam, and registration with Gas Safe Register

It should be that you need to either open an account and prove your gsr or show your card for every purchase, but then again no one else ever asks to see it

i wouldnt trust cards as they can be modded/changed its not hard to link the gsr list to shops network and tbh b & q etc shouldnt be selling parts/fires/boilers off the shelf order only

Ain't being funny, but holding a qualification and being on the register don't mean the card holder ain't a cowboy.. I'm sure there are plenty of "gas safe" engineers out there who cut corners or just 'can't be bothered' to check the safety device of a gas valve when doing landlord certs. I know of some who, if there is stuff covering the boiler they won't check it and will make up figures just to pass it and get to the next job to get home early. Its shocking. Scary.

Me, I can't sleep at night if I think I've ****ed up or not checked something properly.

was at a local merchant other day. guy walks in and asks for a tin of lds. then he says to the counter staff 'what do you do just spray it on the joints?'

the guy next to him, some imagrant from the local car wash, with a 2 foot lead pipe and water meter in his hand wants a connector to re-connect lead pipe back to mains!!lol

Even so the fact that you can just buy anything you like is the problem, even though its not hard to produce/modify a card it would still stop most of the people and maybe help the ignorant DIY'ers who don't know the laws/regs

I can tell you for a fact that probably half the people whom are gsr are incompetent at the job, when I done my gas assessments in college out of 20 people id say 5 where capable 5 needed additional training and the rest should never be allowed to touch gas but everyone passed

One lad couldn't see any problems with the SPF fitting on the pipe work or the cooker with bright yellow flames
