No they are not the same size. How you widen the hole in the tank depends usually on what its made off.

If its steel, either you could use a rotary file in a power drill or a rat tail file.
You could of course use a sharp knife on a plastic tank, if your steady enough.
You can also get a narrow half round wood rasp for use on a plastic tank, I find them easier than files, which usually get blocked up.
Make the hole just big enough for the new fitting and not to tight that it deforms the tank or to loose that there is loads of space around it to leak. Wrap a few turns of PTFE around the new connector and put a 3/4" poly washer on the inside and outside of the connector. Then tighten, but over gorilla tight. 🙂
