42mm copper tube

Hi all, my question is on soldering techniques. I usually do 15mm - 28mm copper work and can solder well. I am set to try a little bit of 42mm copper work for the first time and just wondered if theres anything different you need to do? Thanks in advance

Is a bigger blow lamp really needed or just makes it easier??

Mapp gas if you know how to use it. And it can be done with standard gas torch.

More heat !!! (not a hotter flame, don't try MAPP gas) get your mates gun on the other side of the joint at the same time.

Thanks for the replies. Is it more a case of circulating the heat around the joint more than you would need to on domestic sizes? Im looking forward to this job as im more interested in commercial than domestic but dont want to bugger any fittings up because of the costs involved!!

u think that till u go to the scrappies 😉

Mostly commerical stuff i do, i use a rothenburger head witht mapp gas. Just point the bottle in the direction u want the solder to flow. sometimes on bigger pipe i heat not just the fittin but a few mm of the pipe beside the fittin. i find it helps the solder run. each to there own!
Mind n put enought flux on!

yea i always heat pipe anyway. Yea i know what u mean with the scrappies!! 1x 42mm ef 45 elbow - £20. Pennies back from the scrappies lol

I think it was around £28 per metre. Sounds very expensive to me but not ever having bought a length of 42mm before, i wouldnt know. That was from pipe centre

yer alot of my jobs are mapress say 90% seen a hype in it now theres alot of jobs spec'ing end feed.

using mapress can get expensive rather quickly

Excuse my ignorance, what is mapress?? Is tht the stuff that looks very similar to yorkshire soldered joints but isnt soldered??

its a crimp fitting that you use a special machine to crimp the fitting onto the pipe. used in places where theres not hot works etc. but fitted properly its very reliable. youtube it

Cheers, i'll take a look. Is the crimping tool expensive?? I do a lot of work in schools. Soldering is risky business with smoke alarms. Not slways easy to cover and they dont let you switch them off. Doesnt go down well if the whole school gets evacuated because youve soldered a bit too much lol

More and more hire shops have them now. They're rather pricey. I believe the heads can cost a couple of hundred.
